For this particular deal it’s probably best for us to not know the detail..

Garbutt was rumoured to be on a £20k pw contract wasn’t he? Looking at the clubs he’s been loaned to over the years, we would’ve covered most of it .
I remember when Garbutt was re-signed after a few good (2/3?) performances many were made up, especially as other clubs were sniffing.

Stop, stop, stop. Book value is meaningless.

How much are his wages? How much will another club pay for him? How much will his replacement cost in wages and fees? If you don’t sell now how does that change these answers? Which players give you the best chance at good results?

Book value is only useful for the audit and Deloitte report.

It really isn’t meaningless. It may be boring, but that is neither here nor there.

How much profit a club makes on a player isn’t derived from the sale value less the purchase value, but the sale value less the book value at the time of sale.

If we buy a player for £50m and sell one year later for £60m the profit to the P&L is £20m (the book value after purchase having decreased by 1/5 assuming a 5 year deal).

If we buy a player for £7m and sell 4 years later for £30m the profit is £28.6m.

Ultimately this gives us more wiggle room when tackling the likes of FFP.

Yep. It got written in an article once and suddenly everyone was all over it as if it's the most important thing in the world. Some people seem to genuinely think that showing a profit in a years accounts is better than actually making a profit, and having more money in your bank account. It's mental.

Agree completely that cash is king in any business, but the sad fact is that there are hoops to jump through these days that revolve solely around profit and loss according to the accounts.

Not to mention that potential financing for the stadium, etc, will depend on reviews of the accounts, not just Scrooge McDuck having a look at the latest bank statement.

Well you know what they say, life is like a hurricane down in Duckberg
