Well it’s not a pointless signing entirely is it, he’s an investment, a project like Onana was. Maybe he comes in and surprises us and plays more than we thought he would, like Onana did? Cos I don’t think we initially planned to play Onana every week with how young and inexperienced he was at top level football.

But we need to be buying these young players before they go elsewhere and we’re in for em at 20, 30 million plus later down the line, that’s how we should be run, in a similar vain to Brighton.

But I’m sure we will bring in another striker, a more senior one that will deputise more often than not if Dom is out

It's impossible to judge whether this signing makes sense without knowing the budget and what else will get done. It's the sort of signing we should be making in an ideal world but if it prevents us from doing the business we need for the season ahead then 12 million for a project seems like an indulgence.

I do (I think) have enough faith in Thelwell that he wouldn't blow the budget on a punt so hopefully it's a sign there's more in the tank to get the signings we need before the deadline.

But it’s not £12m all in from the off is it, I read £2m down and the rest over his contract so to start with it’s basically nothing. But I don’t think we would be committing to this sort of deal if we didn’t think we had more in the kitty or that we will end up with more to then go out and get other players

Yeah I get that, but then if we are trying to structure all our deals like that then the extra 2m towards a downpayment could still deliver 8-10m onto another transfer for someone we need now. But like I say I have just about enough faith that they are leaving what they need in the tank for other deals.
