The quantity of £20m+ signings who either have or will leave us on a free is obscene… and that’s mostly down to the insane wages we’ve given them meaning either no one wants them or they players aren’t willing to take a pay cut to leave.Can't recall the source but I saw a figure recently that it was £235m net spend.
It's really wages and the lack of sell-on value for those players, combined with lack of commercial revenue, that has done for us.

We did have a splurge but it wasn't spectacular, far from it.
The new strategy (or what seems to be the new strategy) of spending money on young players on manageable wages is just so much better. Even if you spend a decent wedge on a transfer fee, you’re vastly less likely to take an absolute bath if the signing doesn’t work out.
Look at Moise Kean - bit of a disaster of a signing in a football sense, yet we still either broke even or made a small profit.
