Summer transfer window 2023

I believe any club would have to pay over £50m to sign him this window, and quite a lot more than £50m

He is a better player with a higher profile, and more international caps, than Lavia, who is worth £60m.

I could imagine United are interested in signing the player, but maybe not at the value it would take. The market is the market right now, and they have to pay a fee that reflects that or we will keep the player.
Lavia is only 19 though, I know Onana is only 21 but at 19 he has a year in the PL and looked very good. Clearly the professional scouts working for RS and Liverpool (who I would suspect are better at judging a player's ability than you or I) think Lavia is the player to go for, otherwise the bids would be for Onana

I assume you mean Chelsea and Liverpool's scouts.

I would not necessarily agree about Chelsea. Their recruitment in the last year has been bizarre, and makes zero sense. Just signing a lot of individuals with no idea how to fit them into a team. Lots of the players look extremely overvalued and overrated as well.

It has stopped him leaving so far hence our high asking price for him ... same difference 20% 0£ 20 grand if we sold him for 50 million we would gain nothing it would have to be well higher for us to gain financially
It's not the "same difference" though, it's quite a big difference.
£12m is £12m
20% of the profit on a £50m sale would be ~£3m

yep, good spot, just a typo!

I agree the recruitment has been bizarre but that is more down to the player positions they purchase and the amount of players. I don't think there are any or many players that individually are not really good players. Their issue is they are not buying a balanced squad

3million and plus agents fees to a club who,our skint is a lot to us mate
I todays market he's worth more than that anyway no sale as yet just rumours
I didn't say £3m wasn't a lot... just that it's not the same (or even close) to either a straight £12m or 20% of the full sale amount.

It is a rumour about United being interested. It may well be true but as we all know, clubs are linked to many players every day during the transfer window and the vast majority of them end up being BS. But, absolutely nothing wrong with discussing it, that is what the forum is for. But the point I was making is that Caicedo's sale price does not suddenly put Onana as a 70m player. Even the report suggests 50m
I get that, but it does inflate the market for young CMs. £115m is stupid money and Chelsea are only spending that because Brighton are extremely tough negotiators.

Statistically Onana is on par with Lavia, if not better in some areas and he offers more international experience and physicality than Lavia. Hence whatever Lavias price is should be a benchmark for the club (as a final figure received), but no selling club enters negotiations with the figure they expect to receive. Starting out at £50m would be barmy because he'd likely go for less than that.

Having said all the above, the club shouldn't sell, as we are in no position to weaken the team this close to the end of the window. Onanas value is unlikely to go down by next year so there's no need to sell but if we do, we need to be rinsing United of a high fee

Talent and physical attributes are one thing, but really struggle to see something crazy like £70m for someone who didn’t get a MofM award in our hopeless team last year.

As always, it comes down to the fact that £70m to spend for us is like £10m to the likes of Brighton. We could very easily spend it and be worse off on the pitch.
