Summer transfer window 2023

Why have people started saying "flip" instead of sell?

Why are we now "flipping players"? Can we just stick to selling? Thanks.

Flip would be like when you buy a house to rennovate for the purpose of a quick sale (flip).

With a player you buy with one eye on a quick sale within 18months id say its similar...youre buying to flip.

Weve signed Chermiti and Beto. If Chermiti develops well over the next 12months would we perhaps not look to flip/sell Beto at a profit ?

I could see that happening. For once some (literal) forward planning.

Id have signed 3 players only this summer on permanents. Any of CF, RW, ACM and CM. Then used loans.

But as weve filled CF (with both Chermiti and Beto) and used loans on the others were going to have to hope a CM, ACM or RW comes in to ease the burden for next summer.

If Onana is out for any time were done for with no other midfielder worthy of the name aside from Garner.

The same goes for any RW or ACM.

Onana has been a DM (anchor) all his career for his teams and for all the national youth and full team.

Garner has played there for Forest but mostly at CM. Get them playing together and we'll see them help each other and develop faster i reckon.

Otherwise a DM/CM to come in as 4th choice to develop ready for next season would be good.

An ACM (Gnonto) or RW (Bakayoko) would be perfect.
I think Garner and Onana are the only combination that works as a two and if you see the positions Onana takes up as first midfield receiver his instincts are there to play the DM role. Another DM would be great as would another creative player, I'm not sure we are in a position to solve injuries that haven't happened, the financial restrictions are too great and we will have to roll the dice (dyche) on a position or two and hope players stay fit.

It is actually terrifying how many players we're losing at the end of the year. As it stands, without making loans permanent or offering any one year deals to older players, we're due to lose Iwobi, Dele, Doucoure, Gana, Young, Coleman, Danjuma, Harrison, Gray (on the off chance he doesn't go now), Gomes, Gbamin, and Lonergan.

Now the good news is, we'll be saving about £300k p/w on Dele, Gomes and Gbamin who will likely never feature for us again. It'll help bring our wage bill down massively which is long overdue.

The bad news is, the rest of them bar Lonergan are first teamers and largely going to be in the first XI. Whilst a few of them are of questionable quality, it will ultimately require money we don't have to replace them. If we do survive this season, which let's be honest is a real concern, it'll be yet another year of patching things up to survive another season.
If we had the money, than I'd say it's the perfect opportunity for the reset we've been crying out for.

Find the right man to take us forward, and that should be joy to the eyes....

Thats true but that's only one side of the coin being solved. Windows roll over and I am very concerned by the lack acknowledgment of looming expirings being reflected in our business over multiple windows. My thought dating to the beginning of the summer (and before that) was to diversify the investment in the low teens with mostly under 23 darts over a myriad of squad positions. They may not all hit but the fact is we needed bodies and limited resources would warrant more evenly dispersed resources that potentially could generate future funds. Instead we have garnered frees and then seismic outlays as demonstrated by Beto. Loans for Danjuma and Harrison have credence in short sightedness staving off the drop with supposed immediate impact. But elsewhere? I don't see the names likely sellable for funds, or the recruitment recognizing the pool of expirings.

This dates to beginning of Thelwell. He has been stark in frees and then considerable transfer fee acquisitions to I think in total questionable results. With the above 20 million investments the majority arent projecting considerable profit in a hypothetical sell. I just don't understand why we haven't taken notes from the majority of clubs in our predicament with simply a lower bar of targets transfer wise.

I agree but with a couple of caveats:

Mykolenko, Branthwaite, Patterson, Garner, Onana and McNeil make 6 positions of the squad filled with long term players.

In addition next season we could see, Dobbin, Mills and Chermiti all cement themselves within the squad.

Thats 9 squad positions from say 23 covered long term.

The fine margins are clear as if we added Wharton(CM), Bakayoko(RW) and Gnonto(ACM) we would look extremely strong in terms of long term planning and limited business required next summer.

Next summer we currently need:

1 × LB
1 × RB
2 × CM
2 × ACM
2 × RW

Just on contracts expiring and adding bodies.

The following summer we need 2 × CB.

Before the end of the window we need to bring in young players to develop over the next 12months. Otherwise Jan and next summer will be a nightmare.

There's got to be a right mid/wing brought in as a priority.
It's a crime playing Garner there.

He's only playing there because iwobi, Harrison and McNeil are all injured. And because we still hadn't a forward other than maupay come the weekend, danjuma was chosen to play striker. Danjuma's normal position will be on the wing.

A centre back and a centre mid are far more important than another winger.

one not afraid to play a throughball if possible

Agreed.

If we stick with similar to 2 CMs and 1 ACM then we have Onana and Garner then nothing else of note so we need 2 more in there. We also need 2 new ACMs for creativity and goals.

I hope also that out wide were hoping Mills develops enough to be a RW option next season and Dobbin improves over this season to be the same.

That lessens our need for wide players and we'd only need 1 RW then.

Alot needs to be done over the next 2 seasons due to player contracts.

I think we actually need something silly like £200mil spent on the squad during that time.

If we had the money, than I'd say it's the perfect opportunity for the reset we've been crying out for.

We need a large amount of money to sign young players across the squad to develop.

Over next 1-2 seasons most of those players should be in place.

Then we bring in a manager to take their development up a notch with an effective style of football.

They are interchangeable I agree but this side badly lacks left footers , particularly wide right.

Hopefully we will have been taken over and out of any FFP restrictions ( but maybe not )

I dont think we have FFP issues now and if Gray is sold we should be well out of it next summer.

Hopefully as the stadium gets closer to taking shape, Moshiri has a 2nd wind and opens the chequebook again for a last hurrah.

I think the only wind we will get from Moshiri is him feeling once the stadium gets built, selling the club. Which I would be fine with as long as its not the lucky 777 group.
