Summer transfer window 2023

Agreed. If Kepa Arrizabalaga was £80M then England's number 1 in his prime should be north of that. I'd say £60M plus Henderson plus addons wouldnt be far off. He is literally our prize asset.
Difference being is we are a selling club and everyone knows it.

We haven't a pot to use so this summer will be a couple of big sales (Pickford and/or Onana) and free transfers plus loans.

Good Times

Can’t see anyone buying DCL now. Which is probably a blow to Everton’s financial planning as at one point we could have sold him similar to Richarlison’s fee.

The advantage is that if we can get players to replace him in then we can use him when he is fit and actually have a pool of strikers with options from the bench. A crazy idea for Everton.
Imagine Everton having succession planning, the notion doesn’t exist at this club.

They’ll be thinking “we have a striker, just get him first and we’ll be fine”

Honestly think there's some dramatic tempering of expectation levels required here

Do I think Weghorst would change our fortunes dramatically? No

Do I think he's better than Maupay or Simms? Yes

Would I be happy if he were the only striker we signed? No

But we have to bring in (probably) a reserve keeper, a left back, a centre back, at least one centre mid, a wide player and a couple of strikers this summer on a budget of next-to-nothing

There's going to have to be some compromise along the way - for instance, we don't need to sign two strikers who are as good as or better than DCL - one of them just needs to be better than Maupay/Simms and the other needs to be DCL level.

The main arguments I'm seeing against Weghorst is his record in the PL - he's scored twice and assisted 4 times in 37 appearances in the PL (although it works out at about 25 full games), not great numbers for a striker, but he played in midfield a fair bit for United at times and, for all he misfired in front of goal, he does have some attributes which are useful - there's a YouTube video somewhere in this thread of his highlights from one game which give you an idea about what he brings to the table.

If he were a loan and coming in alongside another striker, I could see the logic in the move. We will not be spending money on every player we need as we don't have it, so loans and frees are going to be important this summer. Having said all that, I would be surprised to see Burnley loan him out again, so it sort of becomes a moot point as I wouldn't want us spending actual money on a 30 year old

Yeah we need a group of strikers and we need strikers who stay fit.

If Maupay is going which looked likely, then we have DCL who can’t be relied on and Simms who is raw.

We need first choice options of course, but if Dyche can bring in a player he trusts, who is happy to be a squad option, on minimal money, and can effectively be a third or fourth choice striker then it’s not a bad move.

The problem Everton have is not that players like Rondon Weghorst Maupay etc. are third or fourth choice strikers, it’s that they end up becoming first choice for the entire season because first choice players at Everton just do not stay fit.

The physical conditioning and injury prevention at the club have to be improved and first choice attacking options have to be brought in, then fans might stop losing their minds over links to Weghorst.

I said this a couple of weeks ago in the PL you have Alpha and Beta strikers. An Alpha costs big money and generally wont go to a club where there is an existing Alpha, unless they also play as is a wide forward. Thus you are either signing a Beta - below the level of an alpha - like Weghorst - though he prob wouldnt be happy with that. Or you are dropping big money on an Alpha with reassurances that DCL is now the Beta- i dont think we will be signing a new Alpha. Only the top CL clubs can hold two or three alphas - because they know they will play games across multiple competitions and have prestige with trophies.

We are signing a Beta in my opinion, so welcome Wout.

We do need some options off the bench mate.
Yes we need options, but not back ups.

If someone is not good enough to start for this version of Everton, then they aren't good enough to play for Everton and shouldn't even be considered as a new signing. If you don't get into this Everton team, then you aren't a top flight calibre football player.

I don't want to see Branthwaite and /or Cannon loaned out again and then sold for peanuts in January but I fear this is what will happen . Based on nothing but the general ineptitude around the club.

The new Saudi drive to sign free transfers like Zaha and Traore alongside old legends like Benzema, Ronaldo & Kante is not good news for us, considering we don’t have a pot to pish in.

Whereas high profile out of contract players like Bernard may have chosen Everton in the past, Saudi clubs are offering insane wages to Bosman players this summer. I would not be surprised to see the likes of Dembele and Bamba take the money.

Players who are willing to go and waste a portion of their career in Saudi league for a fat cheque are the exact type of people we should be avoiding anyway.

That's what got us into this mess in the first place, filling a squad with mercenaries who only joined Everton because we offered them a higher wage than anyone else.

We need to be looking to emulate how we operated in the Moyes era. Shrewd purchases of hungry players with something to prove.
