Can you name me another player in Evertons recent past who took a step down from a bigger club and was a success? Lukaku wanted out the door as soon as he walked though it, he always saw us as a stepping stone and said as much. And just talking about Stones, John Stones is another player who was ready to make a step up.

Coleman, Baines, Lescott etc etc the list goes on

So lukaku wasn’t a success (I see you pre-empted that one)… some still pine after him.
I guess Tim Howard was a failure here too.
Phil Neville was our captain for years.
Gareth Barry was horrid too I assume. Deulofeu? James?

Is that enough or I guess they’re just not successful/recent enough for you?

And you don’t think Digne was a success?

We bought stones from Barnsley IIRC, and I’ve not mentioned him prior to.

It's just a simplistic way of looking at it I think. Baines and Jagielka weren't successes because of where we signed them from, they were successes because they were good. Neville, Howard, and Saha were successes for sure, Lukaku who you've already mentioned, Digne, Mina and Deulofeu to an extent. The list goes on.
Youre having to go pretty far back to get successes from bigger clubs. Our recent past witn these types of players has been woeful. And Neville was just decent, Saha was too injury prone but Howard was a success granted.

If we stay up and Forest go down - spend all we have on Morgan Gibbs-White and a decent striker.

Ideally we can bring in a few more but if not, that gives is adequate creativity and firepower to tilt the odds in our favour.

Do that, and retain what we have and we'll survive next season. Then build again.

Gibbs-White is someone I'd love to get in.

That Gyokeres looks very decent IMO. The fact he can assist as well.

Really wanted us to be looking at Joao Pedro but that ship has sailed.

You say go far back but you cite arteta cahill jags etc which as as far if not further back.

No I dont count injury prone players or players with huge fitness issues as successes. Digne started ok but fell off acliff. Mina is also not a success even though \i love his character. Barry was fantastic.

Gareth Barry, lukaku, Tim Howard, Phil Neville (like him or not, starter in a team that finished 4-7th), pienaar. All from the same time frame you cit, all took a step down. No injury issues.

James had a good half season 2 season ago. Gana came from psg and has been ever present in midfield this year.

Just saying ‘don’t look at big club rejects’ I think it too general and dismisses some of our better players over the last 15 years.

You forgot James Rodriguez.
