Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

You always have to be a bit careful signing hyped up championship players. This time last year Jack Clarke was Sunderland's 'wonderkid' and I think he had much better stats than Grigg does at present. Clarke has spent most of this season sitting on the Ipswich substitute bench.

….Moyes will be accountable for signings, thankfully he’ll be the one sanctioning any deals this summer. I think it’s well worth us discussing any links/rumours, hopefully he can address the lack of quality he’s regularly mentioning in his post-match interviews.

….that’s it. It all comes down to judgement, that’s why it’s important to have some acceptance criteria; quality, athleticism/pace, attitude, blend, injury record, age, price etc.

Hey we didn't call him "Dithering Dave" for nothing Eggs, but I would think the reasons for that were usually sound, Everton benefited for that dithering in most cases.

….was thinking exactly the same, I’d imagine he’s very particular and won’t sign something off until he’s certain.

I was told from somebody directly involved many years ago about him having a meeting with his recruitment team. He asked who is the most talented unknown youngster in the country and how much would it cost to buy him. He was told Southampton have a young lad called Gareth Bale but it would cost £1m to get him. Moyes said it was too much.

I look back at that now and think what might have been but he clearly has strict criteria and sticks to it.

You have to careful signing players from anywhere so that whole thing is a moot point.

Well, the need to be careful makes the point being made pertinent rather than moot tbh. And I think there is a greater need of care when assessing hyped up championship players. There are many players that look good in the championship but cannot hack the premier league.

Sunderland sold their 'wonderkid' last summer, a lad that had one of the best goals and assist returns in the Championship, and yet they've barely missed him, and he struggles for game time in the Premier League. Sunderland now apparently have a new collection of several wonderkids, who probably won't even get promoted, and if they did they'd get relegated the following season.

I'm not averse to signing good players from the Championship, but for every Jarrad Bowen there are several Jack Clarke's.

Think with Clarke (a bit like Philogene) it was a bad move for them.

McKenna talks about having 2 players for each position and he's using Ben #Johnson as a winger at the moment to try and make them more sturdy.

I'd argue Clarke wouldn't get into our side with N'Diaye taking up that position, and i cant really think of many clubs in the PL he would be guarenteed a spot every week.

Maybe he would of been better getting to the PL naturally with Sunderland

See the same for someone like Summerville who was the best player in the Championship last season, but before his injury was starting to show a slight bit of settling in to the PL

Check out DM's signings at WHU. They were mostly crap especially the centre forwards. He hit the jackpot with Bowden but that was almost it other than that winger from Holland and they were some very expensive cock-ups.
i hope its a committee decision rather than DM alone.
