If its £5m+, blatant panic buy for Moyes but given the circumstances, thats understandable.

Looks as though we've tested the water with Taylor and Luisao and Distin turned out to be the only proven Premiership defender we could bring in for a reasonable enough fee.

Since when does Moyes pay that type of money for players with no resale value?....

He will still be worth about a 1.5mil in a couple of years if he does well with us.

How many players have they linked us with this Summer? Sooner or later they will get 1 right.

Quite true mate. Just glad they are starting to get something right at the moment. By the way, i totally agree you that it is a Red paper, for what it is worth. (y)

Phil Neville? Tim Howard? Nuno Valente? Different prices, but its a different market and yes these players were younger.

Valente was about £1m wasn't he? And under 30.
Howard was 27/28 when we signed him, and a goalkeeper. Massive difference
Phil Neville was £3.5m, and 28.

Odd signing for Moyes this, if the fee is correct. £5m+ for someone over 30...

I rate Distin though. Good player. Massively frustrating though that he was on a free two years ago though.

The fee and the fact Moyes didn't go for him when he was free suggests its a panic buy.

I dont know mate, he's been buying younger players of late with an eye on the future but sometimes you got to go for the right now.

Being in Europe and wanting to do well in the league, plus the fact importantly he's left footed - its a good deal.

And we still got money to spend.

That's actually very well said, mate. I agree entirely.

Like you say, we've still got cash, Distin is an excellent defender (covers 2 spots) and is left footed. Plus, as Tox says, there's plenty of life left in him.

Happy if true.

I was disappointed we didn't bring him in when he was free, but I'm guessing that Moyes certainly looked into it (why wouldn't he?) but was put off by his wages. I presume Pompey were paying him over £40k a week.

Doubt it considering he is paying £5m and over £40k a week now.

Don't get me wrong, as I said on the first post of this thread, I rate him but it is definitely a panic buy. His age, the fee and the fact Moyes didn't want him when he was free heavily suggests so.

Good signing really, yes he's overpriced but he's the best option we have at the moment so I think its worth it.
Clearly not one for the future but he's in good nick (hasn't passed medical yet!!) and if we get three years out of him as a challenger/backup to yobo and jagielka I'll be happy. We have mustafi/rodwell hopefully coming through and we could look for a more long term option next year.

of course its a panic buy? we've just lost j-lo and theres 4 days left in transfer market.
still he's a good defender so shouldn't grumble.
3 more players in hopefully.
