spoiling is democratic.

By definition, it is. Mind you, you could argue that abstaining is also. Insofar that it would be a free choice you have made.

Still. Dont think you and I will agree on much politically, but life would be dull if we all did. And it is civil, so all good.

But, Jags eh?

that really doesn't sound like a plan for integration though mate,

isn't that more like immigration restrictions ?

Yes because it would sort ou the people who simply have no interest in intergrating. As I say it's only something I'd put in place now to stop the rot. It won't change what's already happenedbut it might help make it better in future.

this is about right, I admire people who do this rather than sit on their arse and not even bother going. People are dying around the world for the right to vote and folks don't even go to the polling stations in this country.

People died for the right to vote, not for the idea that everybody should vote. Those who wanted everybody to be given the right to vote wanted a world where people were not oppressed. Being given the choice to stay at home and note cast a vote at the polling station is a big part of that.

Apart from speaking english what have you proposed that really helps integration though ? Other than the ethereal idea of having the 'slightest interest in immersing yourself ' . For example Stopping them claiming benefits is fine as a restriction to benefits but don't hide it as an aid to integration because I can't see how it helps

Well you said that a vote for 'this lot' is bewildering, which makes me assume that you think there is a party out there who could do significantly better overall.

I don't think you can call a vote for the Tories bewildering if you don't think that.
you can base your voting on many values and personal ideals, by your comments I assume your economy based ,personally I think your coalition are fudging it, but your fear what of Labour might/might not do shouldn't blind you to the current Tories.

Not in my book !

really ? any idea what's meant by "immersing yourself in british culture" ?

I take it as coming to a country, and embracing the values, traditions, and culture of that country. No problems with folk retaining their own believes and stuff, (what makes this country ace in a lot of ways), but shutting yourself away in some sort on enclave is not good.

And that would apply to Brits buying up villages in France, and apartments in Spain, then demanding baked beans and branston pickle.

what he's actually talking about mate, although he may not know it or is just taking a roundabout way of getting there, is "cultural assimilation"

and that's something that I myself don't believe is an appropriate necessity for integration into a forward thinking and progressive society but then again the sociologists could be wrong, who knows

I've always loved politics as I saw it as a way of really improving the lives of those who needed it most, the poor, the sick, the elderly.

I have to say that with the current stock of politicians I have never been so disenchanted with politics in all my life. I've never agreed with the Tories, the Liberals have been an irrelevance throughout my life, and the Labour Party although closest to my personal political beliefs are so chronically inept and short of talent it is difficult to believe they can win the next election.

What is there to do? I'm at a loss from a party political perspective - I've been a member of the Labour Party since the age of 18, supported Militant as a youngster, watched Kinnock snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, supported Blair from a pragmatic perspective, saw the Labour Party become un-electable through the Blair/Brown debacle and the global credit crunch and today who knows?

I shudder to think of the United Kingdom under another 5 years of Tory rule, I just hope the Labour Party gets its act together and secures a majority in the next election, even with EM as PM..........

Worrying times
This is a great post!

Hey! Easy there mate, my dad has properties abroad and we don't even attempt to "integrate", I want my baked beans.

You are probably right mate. I have little issue with immigration as a whole. These entire islands are made up of all sorts. Part of what makes it ace. But in parts of the UK, I think it has gone too far, with little benefit to the UK, nor really the immigrants themselves.
