You're right. The front bench in 97 was formidable Brown, Blair, Prescott, Straw, Blunkett, Molam. Makes this and the next crop look very weak. No real rising Stars either you could suggest that may make a late run out of nowhere.

If the economy improves during this term as expected Middle England won't feel these impending cuts as much, very real chance now of at least another decade of tory rule.

Every government has a collective responsibility to look after all of its citizens. The last lot are already being investigated by the UN in regards to the impact of their policies on the disabled. With 12b more to come off the welfare it isn't going to get any better.

Look at Miliband's personal ratings - does anyone REALLY think he could have been PM? The British people aren't that stupid, no matter what side of the political fence they sit on.

A credible opposition has to look like a party ready to govern with a clear and appealing alternative vision for the country. Labour have completely failed in that respect over the last 5 years. They are basically unelectable, and I take no pleasure in saying that. The electorate will always punish a party that is unelectable.

Never underestimate the L P's ability to elect a tool. 2020 can be written off right now unless the party comes up with an answer to the Sottish Question, develops a more coherent economic argument and has a leader who appeals across the piece. It's the most lacklustre front bench we've had in my memory but Yvette Cooper has a strength which Burnham seems to lack. Not entirely sure who Chuka would appeal to outside London.

they need to get real, I said on here two years ago they should have ditch Miliband/ Balls/ Harman and the metropolitain set, or they would get hammerd sadly its been proven right, although Ed did ok in the run up the public just didnt see him as a pm , never at any piont has he even come close to call me dave, and i cant see a leader among the front runners to change that, they need to take a leaf out of the torie party and be more ruthless, sad day all round intresting days ahead.

If you think that the government doesn't have a duty of care for all its citizens (constitution or not - we don't have one btw) then I think it confirms the view that pretty much everyone on here took of you.

Weakest in our society being shafted for the benefit of a few.

329 is a staggering result. Ed to be gone within 24 hours, sad way to bow out. Nothing but respect for trying to stand up against the establishment and status quo. Despite the vicious attacks he ran a dignified campaign, on the surface much much better than Camerons but hey what do I know. Suppose theres a reason Lynton Crosby earns £500k a year from the tories.
