The Back Four

Until Coleman gets back in October we have to deal with this defence.

Two seasons ago we conceded 66 goals, last season we conceded 57; already this season we've conceded 6 in 3 games, so we're already on schedule for another horror show.

Our back four has to be:

Garner---Tarkowski---Branthwaite---Mykolenko


If we're not scoring we have to fasten down at the back. That is way more solid than

Patterson---Tarkowski---Branthwaite/Keane---Young.


The very least this manger can do is make that simple enough switch until October.

Although hopefully he's bringing in another CB to hand another option there.

I think it's absolutely fair to say Patterson is currently a weak link until Coleman returns from injury, most of us hope he becomes a great player, but at the moment it's worrying that Coleman is so far away. It is a weak looking backline unless everyone performs above par.

It's the worst defence we've had in any of the relegation seasons we've had.

If we concede 50 odd goals next season I'd be astounded. We are minumum looking at low 60s conceded but more likely to concede somewhere between 68 and 75 goals.

It's a calamity not to have strengthened it.

75 goals? That's nearly Leeds territory. I think our midfield is a bit cagier than there's, that should help that. With the loss of Mina and the injury to Coleman you're 100% right about the defence though, but I will add this: if Branthwaite fulfills his potential, and that's a lot of pressure on the lad, but if so we're in a better place.

I don’t disagree in regard to the current state of our back 4. However, isn’t it the job of a coach to improve player performance ?

Oh there's fear Dave, absolute fear, we've been lucky 2 seasons in a row, we can't rely on luck again this year, but it's a new season, we've got some players in and got rid of a few trashcans, hopefully we kick on, I'm going to kick my heels into fantasy land for a few hours at least before the shadow of Everton grows again after tomorrow's loss!
