The Back Four

oh davek if you spent half the time you spend slagging Patterson off and wanting our most exciting midfielder to play in HIS postion getting a job, you’d have enough dosh to finish the stadium

The back four isn't great especially the full backs defensively but currently we don't have much protection in front of the two full backs. And the midfield isn't protecting them either. Young I would take out he is not a starter in a PL team at 38.

I'd persist with Patterson for a few more games. He's had a rough start to the season but was good at the start of last and in his few appearances under Dyche towards the end of last

Mykolenko also should come back in for me, I think he's fairly okay defensively but just lacks a bit of edge and certainly lacks attacking ability. Also, it has to be remembered that for his faults, at least he is actually a left back.

Branthwaite, I don't want to get too ahead of myself with him, while he was impressive, it was only one game and as a young player his form will go up and down. Also, he's yet to be tested against the top forwards in this league.

Young should be a utility man to cover at either side at fullback when injury strikes or form dips.

Tarkowski is clearly our first choice CB but we do need another to cover injury and also to have him not take his position for granted. I have no faith in Keane or Godfrey to be that player, Keane though not as bad as he is made out to be, is just a toxic figure now. Godfrey, in many ways, is a victim of circumstance but he hasn't kicked on.

Garner has shown he can cover RB, but I'd much prefer that to be a last resort as we cannot continue to hamper player development by never allowing a player to thrive in their natural position.

I think the full backs at this moment are just really poor all round. We've seen in the past the impact quality full backs can have on a team but we must currently have some of the worst in the league.

I hope there's room for Patterson to progress but so far that hasn't happened. Mykolenko has been an even greater disappointment and Young is going to struggle all season long as you'd expect any 38 year old in a poor to.

To summarise this essay.

Stick with Patterson, at least until Coleman is back.

Drop Young, play Mykolenko.

Tarkowski and Branthwaite at CB but ideally we bring someone else in for cover/competition as Keane and Godfrey cannot be trusted.

We have one decent defender... Tarkowski
Plus one promising defender...Branthwaite
That is not a great situation for the rest of the season...
It's disastrous. The only FB we have worthy of the name is Coleman, and we wont see him for 5 weeks and he'll get injured again too.

Our CB situation is one experienced player still good enough to start a game and that's it. Branthwaite is merely potential.

If these charlatans who run the club have nothing up their sleeve by way of a defender or two tomorrow we'll be as good as down.

66 goals the season before last conceded, 57 last season...we'll be seeing something like that this season and the only way we'll survive is scoring about 45-50 goals...and that isn't happening.

Imagine 11PM comes and this doesn't get addressed:

Patterson - Tarkowski - Keane - Young / Mykolenko.

If I'm one of Everton's fellow relegation candidates I'm rubbing my hands at that.

Probably one of the weakest defences in the PL, if not the weakest.

That back four gets battered every match.

Doesn't look like it's going to be 😰

Godfrey, Branthwaite and Coleman missing off your list there

Aston Villa are scoring fo fun so I wouldnt be too down on the defence for that result.
2 goals in the other 2 games is hardly disastrous, solve the lack of goals and we'll be fine.

He was a solid starter last season for a team miles better than us.

To say he is not a starter for an absolute garbage PL team at 38 is probably more accurate.
