The David Moyes debate

Blows your "asset stripping" arguement out.

Oh God, if you're really going to be pedantic.

Wigan have been asset stripped from the Summer transfer window of 2009 until today.

From the end of the 2009 season to the January transfer window of 2012 they have a net spend of -£9m.

Furthermore, since they were promoted to the Premier league in 2005 they have a net spend of right around £0, on top of the fact that they obviously had a far weaker squad to begin with because they had just been promoted. Wigan have done extremely well to stay in the top flight, Martinez particularly when you look at the key players he has lost like Valencia and N'Zogbia.

Their largest purchase since they lost Valencia has been Boselli, a guy who couldn't adapt to the Premier League and has been on loan ever since.

Evertons net spend in the same period is -£12m.

To do a proper comparison you would have to look at the player and the transfer fee's, then how important the player was to the team etc. Not saying you're wrong what you are trying to say because I can't be arsed doing a comparison.

Just look up Wigans player of the Season awards, then do the same with Everton.

Just a few of Evertons, Lescott, Arteta, Pienaar.

And Everton already had a much stronger squad. Comparing their net spends as if they are both under the same circumstances is so redundant. I would say 2 maybe 3 players from Wigan's team would get a look in for us.

And why do Everton have such a stronger squad?

Could it be that Evertons Manager, David Moyes, has used the little cash hes had better than Wigans 3-4 Managers?

It may also be because we spend quite a considerable amount more on wages.

Or it could be that since 2005/2006, when Wigan were promoted with a Championship level squad, their net spend has been £0m while Everton's has been over £30m.

Then you take into account the trips to Europe, ability to pay higher wages, and generally more attractive proposition than Wigan to potential signings.

£30m on top of an already far superior squad would make a bit of a difference.

Another part of the equation you should use to judge the manager is the more abstract one of time afforded in the job. He's had a decade without looking over his shoulder fearing he'll be sacked - unlike other managers - and that has to be factored into how well he's done building a team and style of play.

He's been hamstrung financially (relative to the clubs we're looking to catch) but blessed in that less tangible way.
