Songs you can spark your clogs to, that's us, so relevantI don't mind when fans sing GOT/Everton forever...but when they are played on the tannoy pre match I find it toe curling embarrassing because the tunes sounds so old fashioned, like some 50's musical hall stuff. Not a fan of Spirit of the Blues either , sorry, it reminds me a bit of some early Saturday night light entertainment show would have as a tune.
Works for both songs - "It's a Bland Old Team to support"...multi faceted song! Cant lose really!
Great stuff that Dave, thanks for posting. Even there, 1920, it's saying a traditional battle hymn meaning it was an old song even then.It well predates that in this city mate.
A version was sung by school kids in Liverpool in the inter war period. This is from Terry Cooke's book 'Scotland Road' and shows St Anthony's sung it for their footy team...

I remember looking into it years ago and there was a mention of a newspaper saying of Everton singing it in 1933 but I couldn't open the link to verify it.
The 5000 fans away at Villa must all be ‘feeble minded’ then! The way they sang spirit of the blues was amazing, better than any other away support. The season before last, away at Leicester, was the best away support I’ve heard in my life. And yet again it was spirit of the blues that was sang more than anything! Even carrying on after the match ended! I think it’s a great song, it gets sung continuously, unlike grand old team, which always fizzles out after a minute or so. Watch the game I refer to at Leicester, then still tell me only the feeble minded prefer spirit of the blues!I'd be interested to see that.
The song is indisputably local and has *always* been associated with Everton rather than Liverpool.
It was given a bit of a boost with the recorded Billy Maher version a few years back, but it's one that came from the terraces...unlike that clueless Wooo song that only the feeble minded prefer.
It must have been 15 to 20 years ago it was on the Internet of a newspaper cutting but haven't found it since. Hopefully one of our historians like Billy Smith might uncover the original.I'd be interested to see that.

Reasonable.Jeez, as a support we are amongst - if not - the BEST! And yet, we persist in denigrating each other over trivialities like songs. C'mon, we are forever chastising the cult worshippers across the park for their flag worshipping antics and banal sing-a-longs and yet certain among us ridicule our fans whenever we produce something that is partial to us.
Stop pandering to those who just feel like they need to make a point and, instead, get on with enjoying 'Evertonia'...in whatever form!
Everton 'R' Us! I really should not be surprised so I expect the worst And...Reasonable.
Inevitably, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Is there a more Everton thing to do than expecting the worst, really?Everton 'R' Us! I really should not be surprised so I expect the worst And...
