The EU deal

Is it the idea, or the laws themselves? How has this so far negatively affected you?

It's the principle really because I don't vote for people in Brussels. But as I said, I'm not well enough informed about this issue because I feel Cameron has rushed it straight after a renegotiation that no one has had time to disect, and also all politicians are just shouting ''we must stay!!!'' or ''we must go!!!' without ever stopping to give any reason.

It's bad enough that the politicians on the mainland aren't giving me anything to go off, how do you expect me to get informed listening to my reps over here in N Ireland lol

I feel it's important I use my vote for something like this, but I don't feel I'm going to be able to use it properly from an informed position.

"...We were in consultation all day yesterday with the French Government and we felt that the intensified action which the Germans were taking against Poland allowed no delay in making our own position clear. Accordingly, we decided to send to our Ambassador in Berlin instructions which he was to hand at 9 o'clock this morning to the German Foreign Secretary and which read as follows:-

"In the communication which I had the honour to make to you on the 1st September, I informed you, on the instructions of His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, that unless the German Government were prepared to give His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom satisfactory assurances that the German Government had suspended all aggressive action against Poland and were prepared promptly to withdraw their forces from Polish territory, His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom would, without hesitation, fulfil their obligations to Poland. Although this communication was made more than twenty-four hours ago, no reply has been received but German attacks upon Poland have been continued and intensified. I have accordingly the honour to inform you that, unless not later than 11 a. m., British Summer Time, to-day 3rd September, satisfactory assurances to the above effect have been given by the German Government and have reached His Majesty's Government in London, a state of war will exist between the two countries as from that hour."

That was the final Note. No such undertaking was received by the time stipulated, and, consequently, this country is at war with Germany....."

Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, House of Commons, 3 September 1939

The existence of the EEC and then the EU has avoided any repetition since 1945. War in Europe now seems unimaginable (even Bosnia and FRY is falling into history). My feeling is we have a better prospect of keeping it that way if we stay in. Jaw Jaw (in Brussels) beats War War.

Nothing to do with all that American military might sat in Germany? Also what's going on in the Ukraine is partly down to EU meddling.

Of course the Americans have been involved in keeping outside threats outside.
But can you imaging Germany invading France through Belgium? Or Italy invading Greece? There has been peace between member states. And their solidarity keeps trouble away, outside the EU borders.

Which is not to say that Ukraine was not a major feck up.

right, so we agree then. pointless having the vote. Lets cancel it now and save a lot of money and guff in the press.

The point is, turkeys voting for Christmas. If, as I expect, but really don't want, the vote is to remain, then anything further down the line will have a ready made defence from the EU of having 'legitimacy'. We wouldn't be in any position to contest any unwanted legislation.

'If' we were to opt out we have a misused and undervalued, albeit imperfect, democratic process that we can employ and vote an alternative.

The 'point' is lost in the theatre of nonsense being played out in the media. After all, what do we really know about the EU? We are fed through the media varying 'topics' that are the main talking points, the ones that count and are whipped up with both arguments. What if there was a third way, a way of maintaing trading without the bureaucratic guff, something like a 'Common Market'? How many would vote for that? I would suggest the majority, because that appeases most and dispels the fearmongerjng from both sides.

Wouldn't catch on though.
