The EU deal

Besides Cameron has used all his favours to keep the proposed EU wide tax hike on fuel under wraps until after the referendum

And we don't have choices ? Are you saying that we must buy from Europe and not say, Canada, USA, Australia, India, China, South Africa or the Commonwealth Countries....... I agree we have started boxing ourselves in a bit, but nothing that can't be undone......You seem to believe that the EU has all the cards, I don't ...........

Pete, I am talking from first hand experience having run non EU manufacturing companies selling goods into Europe. It is extremely difficult. Therefore our exports to Europe would fall.

It doesn't matter where our imports come from be it Europe or anywhere else, they would stay the same.

Result - our trade deficit soars, it is inevitable.

Anyone who thinks Britain can leave the EU and that leaving would have no economic consequences is living in cloud cuckoo land.

Apart from the impact on trade (leaving the EU would actually increase our trade deficit with the EU not reduce it), the huge impact on FDI, and the effect on the City, the years of Brexit negotiations would massively reduce business investment plans and significantly impact economic growth.

Sheer lunacy.
Would that really effect us working classes though Esk? I doubt it

There is no way we be allowed to leave! Even if they fail to rig the referendum they will just call a second one to get the right result.

I suspect that if we vote to leave, a second set of proposals would immediately be put upon the table and which may even give us what we really want. That is the EU way. However if we vote to stay in, they will have a good laugh then stitch us up at a pace never seen before........

That may well be true. But it looks as though we will get a vote. I voted to join the EEC European Economic Community not some United States of Europe run by Germany. If all we want to do is be part of something bigger then let's do a deal and become part of the USA and be ruled by them, at least we speak the same language and have a degree of trust....

Wait, you trust the US? lol

DTA.

I'm not whining and whilst the majority want to see reform few I believe want to leave the EU.

Cameron promised the referendum as a sop to the right and to defeat UKIP at their own game. He did so because he never thought he would get elected, not because he wanted to fight a yes/no battle.
Just ment that if EU is so crucial to englands economy why are people so critical and unhappy...Didnt mean to sound harsh

Well I think anything that effects business's ability or desire to invest, or makes selling products abroad more difficult must eventually effect ordinary workers.

The two biggest sectors at risk is car manufacturing and chemicals. If you look at car manufacturing then you have to consider all the component and supply businesses that feed the manufacturing and assembly plants.

So the answer sadly is yes.

It means things become more expensive because they have taxes levied on them - which is what the single or free market was all about. So the tomatoes that we buy from say Italy because they are cheap we now grow ourselves (more expensive or else we would have done it before) or import from another country (more expensive or else we would have done it before) or import from Italy (more expensive).

And, as mentioned above, if we want to keep free trade with Europe we sign up to the European Economic Area with all of the obligations that would entail that we have tried to get out of by voting to leave.

Not wishing to speak for others, but broadly, it is the free movement of labour that seems to create most annoyance.

That and the impression, perhaps reality, that too much stuff we have to swallow is produced in the EU parliament, and we just have to bend the knee.

In reality though, most folks day to day living is not really affected us being in it. And the benefits of membership are usually obscured by the "easy" negatives that are more news worthy.

Our ties with Europe would not go away the day after voting out, there would be years of negotiating to ensure that both Europe and ourselves could get along and prosper, just without the incessant meddling. If goods are of the right quality and price and are currently sold there, then that will continue. They dont buy them because they really like us. Dealing with Europe is difficult, I ran engineering units in Germany, Italy, Spain and the USA and understand the frustrations that come from the bureaucracy that Europe multiplies each year. This is why we need to be able to set up our own trade deals, which at the moment have to be done via the EU. The EU will either be a fantastic superstate or will dissolve into a mess, and I wouldn't want to be a part of either scenario...........
