The EU deal

I'm not whining and whilst the majority want to see reform few I believe want to leave the EU.

Cameron promised the referendum as a sop to the right and to defeat UKIP at their own game. He did so because he never thought he would get elected, not because he wanted to fight a yes/no battle.

That may well be true. But it looks as though we will get a vote. I voted to join the EEC European Economic Community not some United States of Europe run by Germany. If all we want to do is be part of something bigger then let's do a deal and become part of the USA and be ruled by them, at least we speak the same language and have a degree of trust....

Would we stop trading with them ?
Would they stop trading with us ?
Of course there will be economic consequences, but not necessarily negative ones.
So, given that there would be economic consequences, but they wouldn't be too bad, why does the CBI (against regulations and very much right-wing and pro-business) want to stay in the EU?

We would continue to buy similar amounts of European goods. Do you really think Europe would buy the same number of British goods as they do now?

Not only that foreign manufacturers will move manufacturing to Europe further damaging our trade balance and reducing our GDP.

Then maybe British Industry might have a chance of building itself up again, as well as the fishing fleet and all those other things we used to do but now let our EU 'partners' do for us........

Oh, and why do you think that they would continue selling to us but we would just roll over and not be allowed to sell to them.....now that is lunacy......

London is the centre of finance because we have experience, laws and can be trusted.

We would be allowed to sell to them, but everything would cost more. We'd be a less attractive option for trade.

Dont want to leave me, just a tone down of some of it.

That's what most of us want, but if we're the only major nation in the EU that wants to cool things off a bit, it won't happen. As far as I'm aware we are the only major nation who currently wants to tone it down considerably, or at least has the appetite to push for it. Hence unless we get enough other nations on board, we're left at the crossroads of 'stay in and put up with the bits we don't like' or 'leave and embrace an uncertain future alone'.

I am Voting out no matter what he comes back with its corrupt, in the hands of big bushiness , and an undemocratic mess.
This Pm should have them over a barrel, we are one of the biggest contributors, they cant afford yet more uncertainty , Euro/ migrant crisis, the dept burden on Spain ect then one of its big boys leaving, that means The french and German economy taking up the billion pounds strain that we contribute, that will go down well, plus a few more might want to jump ship if we are allowed to go, don't think we will by the way .
The pm is spineless, and its all for show, should have just said we are having a vote in July,if you want us to stay show us what its worth to you/us to keep us, sat back and seen what they could come up with , instead we have this shambles he says he wants to stay in before we have had a meeting, like going on a first date with a bird who shows up half pissed , no knickers on ,knockers out and offers you a viagra before your first drink, only going to have one outcome really, he is going to get screwed.

But we are not alone. OK we wouldn't be in the EU but we have excellent relationships with countries all around the world........

Because of the capacity constraints in the British economy it is a fact that we have to import good fro Europe and elsewhere to satisfy demand. Just because we left Europe it does not mean that the demand for those goods disappears, we would still have to import.

European importers though have the luxury of choice and would continue their imports but switch to other European nations.

It is an inevitable consequence of leaving.

They have stitched him up even though, as you say, he had a pretty good hand to play. Nothing is forever, all things change, perhaps now is the perfect time for us to start being ourselves again........

I meant alone as in 'a completely sovereign nation' as opposed to 'we wouldn't have any mates'.

Although even our 'special mate' the USA would rather us stay in the EU. We are a more useful ally that way.

There is no way we be allowed to leave! Even if they fail to rig the referendum they will just call a second one to get the right result.

And we don't have choices ? Are you saying that we must buy from Europe and not say, Canada, USA, Australia, India, China, South Africa or the Commonwealth Countries....... I agree we have started boxing ourselves in a bit, but nothing that can't be undone......You seem to believe that the EU has all the cards, I don't ...........
