"The fans wanted him sacked"

It even has the bladerunner soundtrack in the background! Makes a nice change to YouTube highlights videos haha.

Why say that? Why not "achieving consistent long-term success is the way to redeem himself"? Why such a narrow time frame?
Exactly.

The feller is at the start of his Everton journey. And for Foot Long Hot Dog to compare this with Walker is nonsense. Did Walker have a fantastic first season under his belt before he faced the boot? No. He was God awful from the get go.

The message of this thread is be careful what you wish for. Martinez might be the man who can take us back to at least a cup win, he might have been found out at a big club. There's only one way to determine that though.

Walker was lauded for keeping us up in 1994, and the pressure only came his way after a terrible few months at the start of 94/95. Martinez is currently doing worse than Walker, Smith or Kendall during the 90's.

Our current form is just as bad as the form at the strart of the 94/95 season, which saw Walker get the sack less than 12 months after he started at Everton.

Wow that was an eye opener! didn't realise it was that rocky for Kendall and co! Awesome, let's just beat everyone from now until forever Bobby ;)

Of course we wanted him sacked. Our support had pride in those days and HK had been producing pure tripe for a long time.
I agree that there are similarities there.

But it was a different time, with different players, different everything really.

Hard to compare to now.
Correct. Bear in mind that by the time the calls for HK to go had reached any sort of momentum we had already had two and a half seasons of failure under him, and no signs of any progress. Even back in those days the managers of all the very biggest clubs in the country would be under very critical pressure on that kind of record. We were never in relegation trouble in 83/4. Up to the famous LC game at Oxford we'd won 9 league games out of 23 played. The criticism was simply because we were Everton, and we deserved and expected far better. Back then our supporters had pride and even though he was a legend as a player they were not willing to stand for how things were.

It's also far, far worse than 83/4 when Kendall came under great pressure.

We were rock bottom, with just one win when Walker was axed, maybe no wins, was he gone by the time we beat West Ham?

We've been poor but not bottom under Roberto.

Our current form is almost identical to when Walker was sacked though. What is it now, one win in ten games or something similarly awful?

I remember calling for Mike Walkers head on a spike at the end of a particularly grim home defeat by Coventry, and some lad behind me turned on me saying "you'd have had Kendall sacked lad".

What Howard achieved during his first tenure 30 years ago doesn't somehow set a template that other Everton managers are going (or likely) to follow. An 'Oxford moment' has been wheeled out as a reason for hanging fire for every manager we've had since.

I hope Martinez finds one, maybe it'll be Sunday, who knows.....
agreed

Walker was sacked after he'd won his first game (v WHU), at, I think, the 12th attempt. He then got a draw somewhere before getting the sack.

Exactly. So how does that back your argument up in any way, shape or form?

Comparing Walker and Martinez.

It's official: this place has been taken over by lunatics.

Unbelievable.

@davek - the comparison with Walker is completely relevant, as he finished the '94 season with the most remarkable game in our modern history i.e. Wimbledon and it was seen as a watershed moment as we'd survived against the odds. We'd lost 6 or 7 on the bounce before be arrived under Gabriel.

He started the next season like a drain and we'd only won 1 game when he was shot, but the parallels with Martinez are definitely there.

A provincial club manager who like to play football, guided Norwich to their finest hour in the UEFA cup beating Bayern Munich, and came to Goodison to transform the club.......
