It’s getting compact at the top though. We now need to shift the b”ig8” if we are including these two.

Mate, with all due respect, I think it’s this type of ‘in-group - out-group’ thinking that Everton so desperately need to move away from.

Villa and Spurs have made a bit of a mockery of the ‘big six’ nonsense, but not really because there’s always been this connection between winning games and finishing higher up the table.

There’s certainly no ‘big 8’, and it does us no favours to paint them as such, with them looking out and us looking in like Charlie Bucket.

Villa and Newcastle are without doubt in our peer group, and I’m quite happy to see them both make a mockery of this ‘big six’ playground nonsense in recent years.

Good post.

What?

We play in the biggest and most watched league in the world. How has roma got a larger reach then us?

Roma play in a capital city but so do crystal palace. You say roma has this massive fan base but im not sure they do. Their more lazio then ac Milan. I very rarely see people in roma tops, see more people in Fiorentina top tbh.

You seem to think roma are a milan, inter or juve level but their no where near. They've won the league 3 times in their whole existence. There essentially west ham.

Ive got nothing against roma and I'm looking forward to having a loose affiliation with them because of this takeover. It feels like youre making them out to be some European power house and there just not.
Difference of opinion
Ultimately as long as they run Roma and Everton ( and whatever other clubs they have or may add to their conglomerate) as entirely seperate entities I will be reasonably content.
But ‘loose association’ with Roma ? Nah , not for me . Want nothing to do with Roma nor any other TFG owned club thanks .
We support Everton not TFG.

I suppose what I’m saying is that there are some decent run clubs now with a lot of spending power, and well managed.
I don’t buy the “big anything” tbh, I just recognise financial power and the head start they have.
To catch villa we need a better manager then they have and to match their squad.
It’s not going to be done anytime soon. Newcastle less so, but they are still ahead and can outspend us.
Admittedly, they are possibly a change of manager away from reverting to the norm.
But we are under pressure to get all of these decisions right. Which is not guaranteed in life

It depends what the end game is for these American owners.
One view is -Once we have a collection of American owners that will vote for changing the league structure, killing off the pyramid and providing a European elite league. Owning a top side in the capital city of Italy is likely be a better commodity.
At the minute having a big side in the “best League in the world” is a better commodity.
Having both allows them to play the short and long game

I agree with you, it should be said though that Newcastle’s squad had received investment prior to the Saudi takeover. They had a forward line of Joelinton Callum Wilson Almiron Saint Maximin all bought for substantial fees. Willock arrived from Arsenal for a big fee, Schar and Lacelles were already there, they had players like Longstaff and Murphy on the books.

Bruce had been given close to 100 mill in transfer fees by Ashley before the takeover. Obviously Howe is a far better manager than Bruce and the signings of Guimaraes Isaak Botman have been very good ones, but I think the Newcastle squad was a far better standard than Bruce had them, he was massively under performing with them.

I don’t think this Everton squad is massively underperforming over a course of a whole season, it hasn’t had 100 mill net spend poured into it and I don’t see a lot of players who would be a part of a team that could qualify in 4th place under any manager.

We need to keep our top players, and then have a few windows of very good players in and poor ones leaving. Combine this with a good manager and change can happen very quickly but we have to keep backing the manager with good players not operating a sell to buy/loan policy.

If Branthwaite and Calvert Lewin go in the summer we’re even further behind where we are now before we’ve even made a transfer.
