The GOT Book Club

Late to the party I know but I got Faith of our Families during the week and it is excellent.

Well done to James Corbett for a fantastic piece of research and building on the work done earlier in the club's history.

I enjoyed the priest's story of scaling the newly tarmacked walls along with his colleagues all wearing their collars so they could get into Boundary Park for the 2nd Division title clincher.

A pity no one managed to get material from Peter Farrell back in the day although lots from Eggo.

Truly a wonderful addition to any footballing household but essential for Evertonians everywhere..."if you want to know yer history..." from the mouths of those who were there!!

10/10.
Got this on my coffee table downstairs. Might have to read after my current book.

Bought Blood Meridian awhile back after reading praise for it on here. Battled my way to roughly the halfway mark before giving up. Not for me, really struggled to invest in any characters or the plot. Found that the book didn't really suck me in and was at times difficult to follow.

What was it the dialogue and the way it`s written that you struggled with ?

It`s one of my all time favourite books and has recently taken it`s place as a modern classic.

If so his book, the Road is an easier read, as it`s written in plain English, but is off the scale bleak, but beautifully written, with only two central characters.

Yeah I think so mate. Struggled with the punctuation couldn't really get into a flow reading it.

Continuing my reading of the Great Game and there are some fantastic anecdotes. The British launched an invasion of Afghanistan in 1838, consisting of 20,000 troops. One regiment commandeered two camels just to carry their cigars - if you must invade a country, at least do it with panache.
Plain Tales from the Raj is another fascinating book which contains direct accounts of Brits and their families who grew up in and ran India. Some moving stories too. Not all bad colonial stuff.

Didnt the Afgans kill them all bar one who they sent back to tell the tale?

very good book.the film was excellent as well i thought.the author was unbelievably lucky.the training the seals have to do is sick.i would be gone after 5 mins.the afghan customs with the pashtun tribe saved his life in that once they took him in they had to protect him to the death even though the taliban were demanding he be handed over.
