The GOT Book Club

McBain, I HATE the Dark Knight strikes again! The Dark Knight Returns is one of the best Batman stories ever but they should never be a follow up. I don't belive Miller was involved in Strikes Again but lent his name to boost sales. Try Long Halloween if you haven't alredy for a good Batman story. I've just re-read All Star Superman to get in the mood for the film (can't wait to see it) and I still don't like it as much as Death of Superman.

I got halfway through Strikes Again and put it down. Miller deffo wrote, penciled and inked it himself and it really shows. Its shockingly bad.

Thanks for the Tip, I was looking for that one the other day but it must have sold out. I have just finished "Hush" which I thought was brilliant, great story and well told and the artwork is amazing. Jim Lee is probably the best artist around today.

And I'm currently onto "Final Crisis", which so far, is Superb.

McBain, how did you find Final Crisis in the end? I just couldn't like it and I really wanted to. I've found that most things conected with grant morrison tend to be overrated or just awful! I love the origanl Crisis on infinite Earths and Infinite Crisis, but this was just a train wreck in slow motion for me (though the art is clearly brillant, just the story I dislike). I think that's just Morrison for you though, you either love his work or hate it! (And as you can see I'm very much in the latter group!) I enjoyed Batman Hush though. Really good story. One of my fav Batman stories is the KightFall story with Bane, oh I wish they would of just used that story for the last film!

Just read KNUCKLE by a fella called James Quinn Mcdonough. He's a traveller and it gives a good insight to bare knuckle boxing and real travelling life.

I'm re-reading the Prisoner of Zenda, for me this is one of the greatest books ever written and is deffently the most underrated. Just berlliant, I can almost recite every line and yet it takes nothing away as the book really is that good.

I just got The Sea Inside by Philip Hoare.

"The sea surrounds us. It gives us life, provides us with the air we breathe and the food we eat. It is where we came from and what we are made of; it represents home and migration, ceaseless change and constant presence ...."

Those first few lines on the dust cover sold it to me. looking forward to this.

Currently reading The pity of war by Niall Ferguson, a very well researched insight into the origins of WW1. It's a big book but well worth reading if you're interested in 19th/20th century history.

It has such a brilliant premise, the New Gods coming back to enslave mankind...nice build up even though I'm really not versed in DC Lore. It got crazy complicated some of the way in and I had to refer to the Net to kind of get what it was on about half of the time. Still, it was a decent sort of effort. Kind of undecided...a little like Millers Batman and Robin : Boy Wonder you want to like it, like you say, it has all the elements but doesn't quite fit together.

I am undecided about Morrison. I can see what he is trying to do with his plot lines, but there's something about him just misses the mark but I can't put my finger on it. I'm of the firm belief that Alan Moore really is the genius of the genre and everyone else is playing catch up. Morrison in particular believes he is Moore's most fervent competitor in his own mind but he really only replicates the themes and circular elements Moore perfected.

I've had a little look at Knightfall but there's several rather large volumes to digest, but I've read a few Batman's lately and felt like something a little different.

I'm currently reading..

Marvel_1602_Vol_1_1.jpg

and after that I'll either dive into..

or

Mcbain, I've not read 1602 but might give that give it a go (as the writer is excellent and the idea sounds good) and I can only say the the sandman series Is fantastic! You won't regret reading that.
