Watched the film of Fatherland years ago so thought I'd give the novel a go. For those who haven't heard of it the premise is that the Nazis won WW2. Set in 1964 it tells the tale of a German detective, and SS member, who is called out to investigate a presumed case of drowning. It turns out that the man was an important Nazi, and from then on he becomes involved in the murky and dangerous politics of the government, both current and past.
It contains themes including the holocaust, the seediness of the Nazi creed, the on going war against Communist 'terrorism' in the East and at home and the forthcoming visit of the anti-semitic President of the USA, Joseph Kennedy.
It's a cracking read with a different ending to that of the film.
Just finished a book called Hitler's Women by Guido Knopp. Very interesting book that focuses on the leading women of the Third Reich and the role they played in the Nazi regime and who were all bound up with Hitler's regime. The six famous women : Eva Braun, Magda Goebbels, Winifred Wagner, Leni Riefenstahl, Zarah Leander, and the legendary screen goddess Marlene Dietrich ( who was not a Nazi)
I found it fascinating how all of these women viewed Hitler as a charming companion. However the huge hole in the book for me was the brief mentions of Geli Raubal I had never previously heard of her) who was Hitler's half-niece and who he was very close to until her suicide in 1931 aged 23.
Well worth a read.
I just started one of the four classics of Chinese literature 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' for the fourth or fifth time, last night. A properly great read.
Still looking for 'Outlaws of the Marsh' (Better known as 'The Water Margin') whenever I go to second-hand bookshops or charity shops.
Look good. I'll give them a goView attachment 27763 View attachment 27761 View attachment 27759
Just finished these three back to back :
Each book follows the corrupt but brilliant London detective, Nick Belsey around London as he tries to stay one step ahead of being locked up by his own, but doing his job as well.
The writing in first one - The Hollow Man is a bit ropey, as it's the authors first book, but sets the tone for the other two. The following two are superb. What makes all of them so special is the way the author brings London to life through the narrative.
Think of Luther crossed with the Shield and you're getting there .
Highly recommended and I hope they do many more.
eBay ?
Look good. I'll give them a go
