The GOT Book Club

Wasn't impressed with Cloverfield but I don't like that "found footage" kind of genre. Thought Blair Witch was a pile of cack!! Would have preferred Ridley Scott. But whoever does it- they have to stick to the book!!

Ps if you haven't read these, I highly recommend them :

Let the Right One In - John Ajvide Lindqvist
( beautifully written about a lonely little boy and the vampire child next door. Tender, brutal, dark and tragic )

The Road - Cormack McCarthy.
( post apocalyptic tale of a man trying to stay alive with his son, as they travel to the perceived safety of the coast. I've never cried so much after reading a book as this, stayed with me for days after, not for the faint hearted ). Film is rubbish, so no comparison.

Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy.

Follows white bounty hunters across the West of America in their quest for Red Indian scalps. GOT favourite book, you'll struggle to read anything as brutal as this. It's that bad they can't fathom a way to turn into a film - seriously !.
Brilliantly written as always with McCarthy, but you've got to be in the mood to read it - scalping babies for instance !.

The Border Trilogy - Cormack McCarthy.

Follows a young lad into adulthood in the Wild West. Not as brutal as most of his others and the three books together are spell binding. The way he describes the sky, the weather, the seasons, the mountains etc is almost poetic.

( I'm a massive fan of McCarthy !!!!!! )

The Red Riding Quartet - David Peace. ( wrote the Damned United about Brian Clough )

Police, press and council corruption in Yorkshire in the seventies, whilst a serial killer lays waste to children. Superbly written, beyond dark and very very disturbing.

CH4 made a three-parter (Might've been four, but I'm sure it was three) of that. Was v.good. Rather dark. Probs still available on 4OD

had a bit of inbetween time while waiting for a batch of books to come so i read the hobbit.honestly dont know how they got 3 feature length films out of it.after seen the films the book was a bit of an anti climax where it just seemed to end so quickly but that is just because i was visualizing the film while reading.

I actually hated the films because they were so different from the book. The Hobbit was never meant to be a massive epic like Lord Of the Rings and it was a daft decision to treat it like one. A single great film would of more then done it justice.

Another one for you if you haven't read it ?

The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks.

It's his first book and imo still his best.

The world as seen through the eyes of a very disturbed teenager " Frank " who lives on an island off Scotland.

Powerful reading. With a truly jaw dropping ending.
Thanks. That sounds good. Have you read any of Stuart Mc bride's books. I like them a lot. Set in Aberdeen. Usually involves a serial killer!

It was written as a children's book which is probably why, in comparison to LOTR, it seems a bit thin.
