The greatest sportsperson?

Sad to see Roger Federer retire, who for me was the greatest sportsperson of my generation. Carried himself well both on and off the court and seems like a genuinely decent guy.

What’s everyone else say?

No fighting pls

I agree, Federer seemed completely on his game on the court and off it. Speaking of tennis, I happened to catch the biography on Showtime of McEnroe, and there was this old footage of his battles with Borg. I was too young to realize how composed and non-verbal Borg was during his career. Absolute stoic monk.

Borg--for the most part--retired after the 1981 US Open loss to McEnroe; he walked off the court, through the dressing room, through the kitchen and into his car and to the airport, never claiming his 2nd place trophy. He was like 25. At the time, he and John were friends and John couldn't believe he would walk away near the top of his game. And in typical non-emotional Borg fashion, he just said, "some day you'll understand that there is more to life than tennis." What a way to go out (though he did play a few more smaller tournaments, but he basically retired after losing to McEnroe at the US open).
