The greatest sportsperson?

Tiger for me.
Didn't just change the sport, he was the sport.
I mean how many of these sports stars line up against 150 other competitors week in and week out, and at his best smack them all silly. Week after week. Year after year
Plus what's his win ratio? 22% of all tournaments he entered, won. Or sommat like that. Ridiculous.
Eddy Merckx did that. Over a six-year period, he won 35% of all races he entered, which given that a fair few stages on races like the Tour will be sprint stages or won by breakaways makes his record frankly absurd. Over his entire 13-year career, he won 28% of the races he entered.

Curiously, nobody has mentioned someone like Serena Williams. What Tiger did for the men's name of golf, she did pretty similar in the women's game of tennis.
That's a very good point.

Just shows how our male brains have been conditioned to think over the years.

Serena Williams was incredible.

Commeneci (spelling?) the Gymnast.

Katerina Witt was absolutely dominant for a while in figure skating.

Sorenstrom in ladies golf.

I feel that's definitely the issue here. Remember when England women's team won the Euros and people said the male U19 World Cup was a bigger accolade?

Anyway, for me, Tiger Woods is probably the more recent choice for his immense impact on the game of golf.

For me, the greatest sports people have to transcend sport and nationality, and are well known around the world, even by non sports fans. People such as

Roger Federer
Pele
Mohamed Ali
Michael Jordan
Cristiano Ronaldo
Tiger Woods
Serena Williams

Cricket players, american football players, even rugby players don't cut it for me - no doubt very well known in their area, but not household names worldwide.
