The Oldies Thread

I'm thinking of jacking it all in.... Having worked at every level in industry and then become semi retired picking up lucrative daily rates from companies who keep knocking on the door.......I've decided that I really enjoy just playing with my granddaughter in the garden. Life is very easy just mowing the lawn (which I had a gardener doing for 30 years), playing in a sandpit and kicking a football with this little treasure. I think, finally, I may have discovered what life is really all about. It's very hard to give up working, but I'm now willing to give it a go.............those that know will understand......

I had to pack work in 4yrs ago when my youngest son was born with a disablity which hadn't been picked up during pregnancy. One of us had to look after him and due to the fact that I was able to draw my pension early it was decided that I'd be the one to pack in. I don't miss work at all, but I do miss my work mates and the stimulation that work provided. Make sure you can fill your days with things you like doing, particularily in the Winter when the weather is bad. I do a lot of voluntary stuff now and never ever put the the telly on during the day as its mind rot. Wish you all the best mate.

Thanks, and I hope things are working out for you all.......

If you've got something to do, Hobbies, Sport, things you've always wanted to do, places to see then do it.

If you're just going to sit in front of the TV, occasionally sit in the garden if it's nice then think twice. It will get very depressing very quickly.

The secret is in the stimulation. Keep moving forward doing the stuff you want to do, keep having objectives, always have something you're working on or doing.

I go the Village hotel leisure sometimes on my way to work, each morning i see familiar faces. All of these people have retired and I think they go for a swim and a steam & sauna for health reasons, but also for social reasons. I often think to myself what a great little way to start the day little fitness and a great social side.
I think that will be me when the time comes
Enjoy the lazy days, you sound as if you deserve it

Pretty much spot on this. I know a few people who have jacked it all in. They do a fair bit of "Last of the Summer Wine" type stuff, just pottering around and generally putting the world to rights, but they also spend more time doing useful stuff and will push off somewhere for three or four days at the drop of a hat if they see something which sparks their interest.

Of course, you have to have the finances to be able to do it, but it seems a pretty good life.

I may have said it on the main forums already, but I'm officially a TW&T these days, which means I only work Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays. It's not the same as Pete's planned retirement, but I'd hate to have to go back to working full time now. If people can afford to finish or curtail their work hours then I'd thoroughly recommend it.

With you there friend. Have been retired now for 11 years, having a great time. Off to the local leisure spa centre 3/4 times a week, just relax enjoy a wine or two. The big plus I can go on holiday any time do not have to worry about school holidays or booking time off from work, Heaven.

PS wish Woolly Blue would bring back his mammoth avatar
