This Iron Maiden torture device consisted of an iron cabinet with a hinged front and spike-covered interior just enough to enclose a person. Once the victim is inside the frame, they would be unable to move due to the number of steel spikes that would impale them in every direction. Jagged edges would poke the victim inside while an interrogator ask them questions.

It's also a myth as it first started appearing well after the middle ages, with which it is associated.

I'm into my fourth week of six undergoing radiotherapy for throat (vocal chord) cancer. This is the bespoke (perforated) mask that is screwed down tight over my face and shoulders before treatment. Each session lasts about ten minutes. I don't recommend it for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia!

The second half of the treatment is already proving a lot worse than the first, particularly as swallowing is really painful and breathing is getting more and more shallow due to the swelling in my airway. On Monday I had to undergo three attempts (total 25 mins but mask removed twice in between). I never thought it would happen but I had a mild panic attempt during the second attempt and really didn't want to go through it a third time. But I did, I survived and yesterday was back to a once-only, as all others had been prior to Monday.
