I'm into my fourth week of six undergoing radiotherapy for throat (vocal chord) cancer. This is the bespoke (perforated) mask that is screwed down tight over my face and shoulders before treatment. Each session lasts about ten minutes. I don't recommend it for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia!

The second half of the treatment is already proving a lot worse than the first, particularly as swallowing is really painful and breathing is getting more and more shallow due to the swelling in my airway. On Monday I had to undergo three attempts (total 25 mins but mask removed twice in between). I never thought it would happen but I had a mild panic attempt during the second attempt and really didn't want to go through it a third time. But I did, I survived and yesterday was back to a once-only, as all others had been prior to Monday.
Crikey.

Good luck mate.

Keep being brave ...

Glad you got through it mate.

I had to have an MRI once which involved me being clamped in for a while. Was completely chilled for a lot of it, but the panic and claustrophobia set in... Not nice at all.

Wishing you a speedy recovery

Thanks Coops. It's when you start thinking about the what ifs. I'm not in the slightest afraid of flying but, occasionally, I might look down at the ground and wonder what if....? The answer is to concentrate on something else, like thinking over and over Don't forget to pick up your jacket (from the blood test cubicle where I left it earlier, after picking up my notebook and list of appointments from radiotherapy reception after leaving it there the day before)
