And he wasn't ready for that job in retrospect. But then again, no manager in the world was at that time. Well, maybe Beckenbauers etc would've been.

The shoes he stepped in to were massive and the owner of those boots really didn't leave too bright of a legacy behind him. Ageing group of know-all-w*nkers (albeit they had merits under their belts) who just didn't want to put their heads down anymore etc. It was a mission impossible right from the start. There is that story about Moyes showing how Jags was playing for Everton and asking the Utd D to do similar kind of things. They laughed him off. "Fooqin Phil Jagielka? This guy showing us Phil Jagielka?" And yes, that was wrong way to present his ideas to that group of players but those players were also absolute stnucs.

He has shown some learning curve along the way.
No matter who took that job at the time was destined to fail with that squad, Ferguson got the best out of them the previous season. The senior players at Utd thought they were untouchable and didn’t need to be coached. Utd havnt been the same since Ferguson left and have probably spent billions on players since.
