The senior players at Everton: do they need to go before we can prosper?

A clear out of senior players like Baines, Williams, Schneiderlin, Jagielka and Rooney

..clearly @davek has a bee in his bonnet over certain players.

I think this is simple. We need better footballers, not just to replace the more senior players. The trick is to bring in better than what you have, regardless of the names Dave highlights. Getting rid of those will not make us a fine team, it’s all about who you replace them with.

It’s not about who leaves, it’s absolutely about who comes in.
Good job we've got Walsh on the case. Phew!!!

Spot on.
If we strengthen the squad, then we'll be able to release older/surplus to requirement players to pursue their career elsewhere.

There is a strong sense that something isn't right behind the scenes. We've seen dramatic drop-offs in performance under every manager since Moyes, which shows an alarming level of professionalism. If it happens under one manager then you could perhaps blame the manager, but to happen so consistently suggests the blame rests with the players. They've shown before a tendency to wilt when they get into positions to do something good (and the pressure thus becomes on), so I'm not convinced at all that we have a good culture in the squad. Where that's come from I have no idea.
Exactly. That's what I'm driving at. My addition to that is to suggest senior players in particular are to blame and because they are senior they carry a lot of weight and therefore act as a counter-power to the coaching staff.

It all depends on how we'd manage replacing them. Not to mention finding people to take them. In a hypothetical scenario though?

- Williams, Mirallas and Schneiderlin can straight up go. They've been the worst of the worst all season.

- Jagielka is more difficult because it's clear that Keane needs a leader next to him to get the most out of him. If we buy a new centre back who can fulfil this role as well as being good enough to partner Keane long-term then yes, Jagielka can go.

If not then it's worth keeping him one more year even as a squad player.

- Baines has to stay. We only have one left back and it would be stupid to buy two new ones together. Buy a new left back, let him transition into being first choice next season then after that you can buy another and let Baines go.

- Rooney will split opinion. A lot of people want to see him retained. I don't. I think most games he's detrimental to the team like he was at the end at Man Utd.

I'd rather see Sigurdsson and Klaassen there with a new number 6 brought in to replace Schneiderlin. Sigurdsson, Klaassen, Davies, Gana and a new holding player does for me for the middle three.

So in a perfect world, a new manager with a vision comes in, thanks them all except Baines and moves them on. Baines can go the year after.

I do have a bee in my bonnet over some mentioned and a great deal of that is down to the obvious lack of commitment we see when things are bleak. I think senior players like them wont stand up and take ownership of the situation. Instead - and safe in the knowledge they are too powerful to move against - they place the coaching staff in the firing line.

Funny how they only ever spoke out against 1 tho isnt.

Not necessarily a need to see them depart to succeed, that could come with or without. Depends on the skills of the next manager.

@davek , an anonymous person just PM'd me, totally out of the blue I might add, and reminded me of another time you were asked to reconsider your tone.

Where the original quote came from, I do not know.
It was AndyC. Me and Andy are good though. I never took offence at the time and still dont. I think we all say things sometimes we shake our heads about later...me every day on here!
