The summer 2013 Everton transfer rumourZ thread

No chance we'd pay Barry's full wages and I doubt he'd cost a loan fee.

The rumours are supposed to have come from Twitter anyway, so it's probably bollocks. I think we've been trying to get our wage bill down recently, so our accountant was probably quite relieved to see the back of Moyes, Neville, Mucha and Hitzlsperger. Which is why I can't see us going for another big-earner even on loan. And we'd have a really leaden midfield if we had Gibson, Barry, Fellaini and Osman to choose from. It wouldn't make much sense.

I'm with you on this. The best players don't have to tackle because their positioning is spot on.

I'm always suspicious of your carragher types who chase back ten yards and throw a last ditch tackle in.

isn't this a bit of what jagielka does? i know it's more blocks as opposed to last ditch tackles, but are a tad suspicious about him?

genuine question and i'm not taking the piss or anything

Even if we only had to pay half his wages (£2.75m) and there was no loan fee, would he get games when Gibson, Fellaini, Osman and Barkley were available?

not really the point though. barkley should be playing the attacking mid role, whilst we all know osman shouldn't be there. That leaves just two in our first team squad to play 2 positions.

..and look, one of them's injured for tomorrow, if he was here, yes, he would be starting tomorrow.

Squad depth has been our achillies heel for so many seasons and is the only reason we're not seriously challenging top 4 on a consistant basis.

Jags I think is better at getting in front of the ball, he doesn't often end up getting caught in front and chasing back.

The classic carragher last ditch tackle is when a ball come in, the forward takes it down, races on goal and carragher chases after him and robs the ball back. And it looks very impressive but I prefer my defenders to win the header in the first place.

Why do we need two midfield anchors? If we only had one then Fellaini, Gibson, Heitinga and even Junior could cover it between them.

I agree that we need competition for places but I think that it should come from our younger players, especially as we need to keep our wage bill down.

And I think that we need more athleticism in the middle of the park. A box to box player like Fer, Rodwell or Diame would offer us something different to what we currently have. I think we'd be too pedestrian if we added Barry to the mix.

Wait a minute here, are people saying we should sign Barry?

If we have him and McCarthy we would be crabtastic in midfield. I'm all for using stats, but lately its gone a bit crazy with them. I prefer to see with my eyes, and watch them play.

Fellaini isn't and never has been a midfield anchor. Him and barry or him and gibson is in no way two midfield anchors.

I think we will for sure keep Baines, Felli, to be honest I don't really care at this point the funds we could get from him are looking more and more appealing, he just isn't giving 100% anymore and doesn't really seem like he even wants to stay.

Since Martinez came not one player has expressed any desire to leave, and certainly the club hasn't shown any interest in offloading any players. And now that Felli's sell-on clause has expired the club is in a strong position to reject any offer for him.

It's hard to judge these things but the players all seem motivated and optimistic enough. With the window due to close in 2 weeks I'll be genuinely surprised if we sell any of the 1st team squad at this stage.

agreed, i feel the same. sadly it's these things that get picked up on highlight reels more than a defender who is so positionally sound that you barely noticed they even played.

i think fellaini is pretty box-to-box myself, just doesn't do it dynamically like yaya toure e.g.

i agree with only needing one anchor and i think that's what we play, but then still, we only have fellaini and osman for the two centre mid spots and no real first team backup. if we got a good winger in one day i would be intruiged to see how pienaar could play in that position. guess he'd get bullied a bit, but then again, leon britton doesn't so it's no formallity.

I think Barry has had his day. If our aim is to pass the ball crisply and win it back again quickly whenever we lose it I don't see him as the answer.

Hes on the downswing absolutely. He will be good at taking the ball off the defence and playing it simple. He will do as an option for the right fee etc.

The last ageing bloke we signed from Manchester City did pretty well for us...
