The summer 2013 Everton transfer rumourZ thread

This season yes. But our squad is ageing what happens down the line when other clubs keep investing and we do not.

Do you know where funding for transfers will come from three years down the line? From selling Barkley.

The most worrying thing is, some people keep saying give the new manager time but we have to think about this, will our best players give him time? If we do manage finish in a crap position this season in the league, I am afraid players like Fellaini, Mirallas and Coleman may demand to leave because they don't see the club is progressing. Hence, I hope we can finish at least 7th to keep the momentum going.

Jose Canas the Real Betis holding midfielder Swansea got for free impressed me yesterday against United - just the type of player we need to replace Osman - excellent distributor of the ball from the back and the centre -
maybe Martinez should scout the top Spanish sides for a spare DM who will fit into his style of play -
or just give Oviedo a go -
we need to tighten our defence on our left hand side - like last season that was our soft underbelly yesterday with both goals coming from the left -
Baines is outstanding on attack but has his weaknesses in defence - playing so high up adds to the pressure -
maybe we can try him in Osmans place as def mid - which will bring him closer to the action up front which is his forte

The problem with that is though its 2 totally different ideas of how the game should be played. Moyes was happy to get a goal up and defend, or go to away games with the mindset of not to get beat, ie play for the draw. This is not me having a dig at Moyes by the way as we were successful doing it. Martinez meanwhile seems to have the ethos of going out to win every game. Whose to say which is right or wrong for us, but i will say i have liked what i have seen from Martinez so far in how he sets the team out and how they are allowed to play without any fear.

Every manager has to have time to build, this is the problem with so many teams the last few years. They give a manager 8 - 10 games and then sack them. How can anyone do anything in that amount of time? Time will breed confidence and familiarity through the team and club as a whole to the new style that is being rolled out by Martinez. We as fans have to have a little patience as there are bound to be a few teething problems whilst this gels.

It just seems to me HK that you already have made up your mind about Martinez without giving the guy a fair crack of the whip. Cut him some slack and enjoy the new tippy tappy football we are playing, whether that be with Mccarthy or not :)

I am a bit old fashion. I want Everton to get 3 points even the football or gameplay is dull. I think results are built based on a good and solid defence.

Okay I agree giving a manager 8 - 10 games is ridiculous so I am preparing to see how it goes for a season. I am harsh on certain thing because for me, the signings we have made so far are not those who I expect and to be honest, a bit underwhelming. I will be very happy and desperate for them to prove me wrong - thus proving me I am a bad judge.

Hear this every season year in year out ,those clubs need to spend if they are going to survive in the premiership, their respective squads are weaker than ours.

I was about to post this... probably too sensible for some.

We go into this season with a squad that is worth far more than many of the clubs who finished below us or the promoted clubs.

We need to strengthen sensibly, try to keep our top players who will adapt to RM's new style, and sell on for good prices any of those that will not adapt or are surplus to our squad needs.

I DO however fear a last minute sale of a top player(s) which gives us no time to use the money on a top class replacement.

It has happened before.

some people really need to take a step back here, it is obvious that Martinez has looked at what he has, and has the brains not to change things too fast and upset the already good foundations in place.

Obvious positives, more creative passing football, great to see. He will slowly but surely implement new ideas and only at pace that will fit the players. For me, just seeing football being played through the team rather than launching to Felli is a breath of fresh air, seeing Barkley given 90 minutes, amazing!! moyes you have a lot to answer... I am really excited at the times ahead, losing felli, yes disappointing but deffo no the end of the world... he is certainly replaceable and yes I believe McCarthy is the player I would go for... he knows what its about, young, will hit the ground running and will be a big player in 1-2 years

To me, if we have no money and felli head has been turned ( look how he shyed out of the tackle for their first goal) sell him for the best price, get a couple of midfielders with the money, players who will play for the shirt and not have his agent (dad) constantly whoring him to the bigger teams

On yesterdays performance, as with pre season, we will move into a new era that will not defend 1- 0 leads and will play the game as it should be COYB

I thought that Canas looked crap!

Weird.

He looked tidy when Swansea were on top the first half hour or so but then went missing. He is going to have to dig in every game to make it in the PL not just when Swansea are playing well.

Time will tell on all these new signings the 'lesser' clubs have made. Out of the clubs that have bought players i must admit i like the look of Southampton. They have a good mix at the moment of young talented British lads and a few foreign lads who look like they can play. Should be an interesting season but just because we have not smashed our transfer record, does not mean its time to start panicking about the likes of Norwich/Cardiff and Swansea etc.

What's with this obsession about the need to strengthen our midfield ?
Our midfield is excellent and with the arrival of Ross Barkley our midfield is looking even better.
If anything I would like more options up front,by that I mean a top drawer striker.

Great post, but be prepared to get shot down in flames by the resident doom mongers.

It's quite simple, if Fellaini goes then we replace him with someone of equal/almost equal quality. Any money we may have left over from that can go towards a backup CM.

So I think that more or less rules McCarthy out... hopefully I haven't just jinxed the sh1t out of us too.

Our midfield is not excellent!

We have 2 very good CM players and 2 attacking ACM players. One may be leaving and one is injury prone. After them 2 we have NO natural CM back up. Osman and Barkley are attacking CM players not deeper CM players and should be fighting it out for the ACM role only ideally. We need at LEAST 1 CM coming in (yes I'd take Barry). That would still leave Osman having to fill in if both were out injured/suspended, so in a perfect world we probably need 2.

CM is the priority, which is clear for anyone to see.
