I dont see signing Alcaraz as a problem, he will be on the free and a good backup, i would still use duffy before him but its worth him being there.

I've made my feelings clear on Alcaraz.

BUT

He's on a free, Martinez knows him better than me, and it's an area we could do with some back up.

And he has a boss name.

Decent back up, but I'm not thrilled about bringing in a 30 year old when we have two teenagers dying to be played there.

Unfair on Martinez that he's getting the backlash of ten years of Moyes ignoring the youth but there it is.

Alcaraz is actually a decent player, but people wont buy it because he plays for wigan. He had a good world cup and since then has had a good time playing for wigan, this season he has had injuries which have kept him out for most of the season, but whenever he has played he has done well

His good traits are the fact he is very good in the air, and at winning headers, he is strong and good in the tackle a long with being a good marker. He is a little slow but i think that wont be too much of a problem, and as people have said he is alright on the ball. He wont be coming here to be a starter, but he will be a very good back up.

if he can defend in the air from set pieces then he needs to come in. would have saved us half a dozen points last season. I do think Martinez will want to play him though and would be gutted if Distin wasn't regular starter. can we bring him on for corners and free kicks

Don't forget the Leeds and European game -- youth don't work, lol...
I'd be happy with this guy as back-up for now, especially compared with Heit's.
Whilst our defence looks good on paper, I reckon it could be stronger in reality (not requiring everyone back for corners etc.)

Maybe the Wigan fans who thought they'd have stayed up if he was fit were onto something. He started 7 PL games and they got 10 points from those games which would have given them 54 points and safety if he was fit! He also started 4 cup games and they won them all, including the wins against us and against city. Fair dues on the results they got with him in the side.

Can't say I really noticed him too much when I've seen him play, although the standout potential negatives from afar are his age and recent injury record. Worth a punt on a free but don't go splashing out on a long contract for someone potentially at the stage of becoming injury-prone. Give him 2 years and take it from there.

I'd play them based on their ability, rather than them being teenagers. We still need another centre half anyway, Distin won't last long.

Good stat that...

We only used three central defenders last year.

Assuming Heitinga leaves, we'll still have four this year without alcaraz. Jags, Distin, Duffy and Stones. This might be distin's last year as a regular, but a fifth centre back still strikes me as just blocking duffy and stones' progress.

Stones is a right back so he will be cover for Coleman, that leaves just Duffy as cover which is very risky if Johnny goes, so another experience defender is needed to replace Johnny.

That's also assuming Stones is a actually going to become a centre half, and that both he and Duffy are actually good enough. Only having two experienced centre halves, one of whom is 35, is a bit mad. One serious injury to either and Duffy will have a lot of pressure on him.
