And I've never said that Barkley should be our 2nd choice defensive midfielder. There are a range of roles in central midfield. As it stands we have Gibson and Fellaini who can play the DCM role, obviously if Fellaini leaves we would need someone in to replace him.

Wiki are quoting ESPN saying that it was 2005-6....just double-checked it with Soccerbase and they say he did make 46 appearances in 2004-5 (making him 17). I stand corrected.

Currently we have Gibson as the deepest player with Osman slightly further ahead and Fellaini in front of him. If they were playing their more natural roles I think that Fellaini and Osman would swap places. If Fer replaces Fellaini and Mirallas is switched inside instead of Osman then Ossie would probably be competing with Barkley for a game if either Fer or Mirallas were unavailable. I think that it would be difficult for any manager to put Ross in ahead of Leon unless he was looking to spring a surprise.

It all depends on which formation Martinez fancies. I don't think Barkley would play ahead of Gibson, Pienaar, Osman, Fellaini or Mirallas anyway, but he should at least be 6/7th choice midfielder this year as opposed to about 10th for most of last year.

It's because no-one has purchased the shares from the incumbent board members thus removing them from the equation. They can have as many chances as they like until this happens.
