"He made 49 appearances in all competitions during the 2005–06 season". He was born May 1987. 2005-1987=18.
If Barkley is a reserve CM that means that if Gibson is injured he'd step up. He'd be hopelessly out of his depth. We might get away with it further up the pitch but we can't expect him to do the defensive side of the job, especially without a senior alongside him.
Yay, crushing realism!Anyone who thinks Everton will buy before we sell needs to remember we Support Everton and unfortunately for us the board don't....
Osman has only been moved into the centre recently because Fellaini has been pushed further forward and we sold Arteta. He's spent the majority of his time with us either on the right of midfield or in the hole. If we played Gibson and Barkley as a pair we would get mullered. Rodwell is still learning the role and he's got 4 years more experience than Barkley as well as being generally more defensively-aware. If you watched football you would know that Barkley played on the right in his loan spell at Leeds, partly because there is more space for him to operate on the flank than in the middle where he would be immediately closed down.
I don't think that Gueye is going to be good enough but we've never really given him a chance to find out. I think that Naismith is an intelligent player rather than a particularly gifted one technically. He's not going to spray passes around or beat his man but he can get on the end of things in the box if given the opportunity.
Heitinga, Jagielka and Distin could make a good trio but he's probably going so it's not really worth discussing.
If we bought a young 'keeper like McCarthy it could cost us £5m and they're probably going to be waiting to play until Howard hangs up his gloves. We can't afford to have that money sitting there in reserve. Our budget needs to be spent on people who will go in to the side.
Why spend £4-£5m on Lescott now when we can get him for nothing in a year when Distin will most probably be retiring? I'd take Alcaraz as back up and send Duffy on loan with a callback clause.
If we played 4-3-3 the chances are that Osman and Barkley wouldn't get in the side. Since when has Mirallas on the left been his best position? Wouldn't he get in the way of Baines and Pienaar if he was operating ahead of them? How much would a decent striker and RWF cost? £22m the pair? If we've raised £34.5m on Fellaini (£24m), Heitinga (£2.5m), Naismith (£2.5m), Gueye (£1m) and Jelavic (£4.5m) and spent on £11.8m on Lescott (£5m) and Fer (£6.8m) we'd just about have enough. I think that we can spend a bit more cleverly though and maximise on the potential of some of the players already with us to make sure that we have money to spend next year too.

I've read/watched every interview from kenwright / martinez since he was appointed and cant remember this being mentioned, unless i missed it.
Bill definitely said this, in the first interview he gave after Martinez signed.
He said how he'd beat man city, not how playing heitinga would mean wigan would win, wasn't it?

This.
Seriously you think a new manager would come in and instantly make public that one oh his new defenders was rubbish, cost Everton the cup game and was targeted for being so poor.
It's no wonder so much pants is spouted on here, people just make lies up! Haha
i love Everton, but why would a big player from europe join us at the min, ****e board with no ambition, a manager who took wigan down, ave wages, no europe...is jeffers still playing.
Sounds familiar. If we get Faddy back or similar, and nobody else, you'll have a point. Let's wait and see mate.i love Everton, but why would a big player from europe join us at the min, ****e board with no ambition, a manager who took wigan down, ave wages, no europe...is jeffers still playing.
