mate is telling me he heard/read dempsey too Everton next week for £9mil. which would make him, what, the 4th biggest club transfer ever? like **** they should be spending £9mil on ANOTHER 30 year old player let alone HAVE that 9mil.

Those of you saying we've received no benefit from the Americans...take a hard look at the tournament you're playing in right now.

We've absolutely raised our profile in the US.

Building brands takes time.

I've posted on this in the thread before. It matters. Won't post my long rant again.

Regardless, I don't know if we need him.

Not a bad point, but none of the other teams there are in it cos they play americans so I wouldn't be conviced that's the reason we were invited.

And I meant in monetary terms, we're not real madrid where we can buy ronaldo and make that up in shirt sales. If a player doesn't improve us on the pitch then we won't make up the money spent by merchandise sold. We just won't.

I maintain that buying a player for marketing reasons is self defeating and shouldn't be a part of a conversation about transfers.

not a chance unless it would be 9 million pesos..they bought him for £6m and his value hasn't increased.

Surely the problem with comparing dempsey's goals and assists per minute with bales is as a fringe player dempsey played msot of his games vs non premier league opposition? I mean 2 goals vs coventry, 2 goals vs basel, asists vs maribor, panathinaikos and carlisle?
To some extent yes but frankly his numbers for the PL only are better than every Everton player aside from Fellaini (and Dempsey did it in less PL minutes than many of our first choice players). (Koné is on the list ahead of Dempsey too in fairness.)

http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Premier_League_Combined_2012-13.html

He got 13 of his 21 combined "points" (to borrow from ice hockey) in the Premier League (I can't be bothered to check if any FA Cup games came v. Prem teams) so more than half his total was against PL teams.

I'm certainly not arguing he is as good as Bale ... but even if we only look at the PL minutes he played ... he did more (or as much) in those somewhat limited minutes than almost all our players did playing more time.

I think we'd be crazy not to do a deal if the price were decent. ... and if he is in the US to speak to us rather than MLS then obviously the price is decent because it's unlikely we'd talk to him unless we knew a deal was plausible.

Not sure why some are so negative really. His age would be accounted for in the fee and his production is a lot better than most seem to be giving him credit for.

Name a better player to ever play for canada at any point. He's the only canadian football to ever do anything in europe,

The theory goes that countries without a strong footballing tradition like australia, usa, china and canada will follow the clubs where their first stars start playing so you can milk that market for money with merchandise sales.

If it worked, then we'd have got loads of chinese fans after taking in their two best players, aussies after cahill, yanks after landon and tim and canadians after radzinski and we'd be rich from all that overseas money.

It didn't work. And it won't work with dempsey, either.

Frank Yallop mate, he was a better player in Europe at Ipswich, very fondly remembered. My mate is an avid Ipswich fan and he thought he was boss. Now managing in the States I believe....frank Yallop not my mate that is.
