Why are we talking about Dempsey? Ain't SSN saying its a MLS team he's talking to....

Anyway i'd like to hope we'v moved on from Dempsey. We don't need him being the biggest point!!

Name a better player to ever play for canada at any point. He's the only canadian football to ever do anything in europe,

The theory goes that countries without a strong footballing tradition like australia, usa, china and canada will follow the clubs where their first stars start playing so you can milk that market for money with merchandise sales.

If it worked, then we'd have got loads of chinese fans after taking in their two best players, aussies after cahill, yanks after landon and tim and canadians after radzinski and we'd be rich from all that overseas money.

It didn't work. And it won't work with dempsey, either.

Well, that's not true.

Though I agree in general. I think you could say that this club benefited in this respect from Donovan, but his short stay mitigated that. Dempsey doesn't have the profile that Donovan does here in the states, though.

Not sure Radzinski is the best example of this either, he's not much more Canadian than I am. Certainly he was never a household name in Canada.

I started supporting at a time no American was playing for Everton. After McBride and Before Time H.

We're getting terribly off topic, but honestly no other footballer to play for the canadian national team had a better career in europe than radzinski.

He won leagues in belgium, scored 5 goals in a decent Cl campaign then came to england and bagged 40 goals here.

There isn't another canadian footballer who even came close to that success in europe.

I could see Dempsey at Vancouver before Seattle, just because of the Nash connection. Dempsey's an egomaniac though, he won't go back to the States for another couple years if he can help it.

This. I like the guy, but his ego is massive. I can't see him going to MLS at 30, when he's still got something to offer in Europe and in a World Cup year unless he doesn't have any other options.

Paul Stalteri won the bundesliga with Werder Bremen, spent 13 years in the top leagues of Germany and England.

At any rate, my original point is if you're going to play the "expand our market" angle, it needs to be someone who is very well known in the country they're from. Radzinski certainly isn't that guy, Dempsey moreso but still not him.

People from those countries will only follow a Prem club for a short time, if they don't win anything. Most of the time.
