j'accuse!
If he'd "fit" in RM's plan or the price we'd have to pay are separate issues and fairly pointless to discuss since there are so many unknowns.
However in terms of his talent and his production he is far and away better than almost all our attacking options. I'll exclude Mirallas because he doesn't have enough Prem experience to compare v. Dempsey (I think Mirallas is better but I can't prove that).
If we include Fellaini as an attacking option you could make a case for him (although I think Dempsey would come out ahead based on actual facts).
The rest? Dempsey has been massively more effective than the rest of our attacking options over the past couple of seasons.
Depending on the formation, he'd either be:
- replacing Pienaar and playing the left side/tucking in in a 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1. Pienaar is less consistent than he was, but he still has a good understanding with Baines. At most, it's a lateral signing.
- replacing somebody at CAM. This probably isn't a terrible place for him, but I think Barkley needs to start playing there this year if the formation allows it. If the money is right, I wouldn't scream, but I'd prefer Barkley, and Osman and Naismith can play the position.
I rate Dempsey but it isn't a smart buy unless Levy decides he doesn't like money and takes 3-4m for him.
