If he'd "fit" in RM's plan or the price we'd have to pay are separate issues and fairly pointless to discuss since there are so many unknowns.

However in terms of his talent and his production he is far and away better than almost all our attacking options. I'll exclude Mirallas because he doesn't have enough Prem experience to compare v. Dempsey (I think Mirallas is better but I can't prove that).

If we include Fellaini as an attacking option you could make a case for him (although I think Dempsey would come out ahead based on actual facts).

The rest? Dempsey has been massively more effective than the rest of our attacking options over the past couple of seasons.

Depending on the formation, he'd either be:

- replacing Pienaar and playing the left side/tucking in in a 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1. Pienaar is less consistent than he was, but he still has a good understanding with Baines. At most, it's a lateral signing.

- replacing somebody at CAM. This probably isn't a terrible place for him, but I think Barkley needs to start playing there this year if the formation allows it. If the money is right, I wouldn't scream, but I'd prefer Barkley, and Osman and Naismith can play the position.

I rate Dempsey but it isn't a smart buy unless Levy decides he doesn't like money and takes 3-4m for him.

Surely the problem with comparing dempsey's goals and assists per minute with bales is as a fringe player dempsey played msot of his games vs non premier league opposition?

I mean 2 goals vs coventry, 2 goals vs basel, asists vs maribor, panathinaikos and carlisle?

why are people suggesting we could sign Dempsey on a nominal fee? When has Levy ever let anyone go on a nominal fee? If anything he'll loan him out to a team in the MLS to save on his wages, no way he'll sell cheaply to a competitor.

He's a decent player, works hard and has a knack of being in the right place at the right time. Would definitely have him as an option at the right price

I know it's gonna be Ross' season but i'd see him as more of an attacking midfield role. He's certainly better than Osman. Also, in some cases it can really help to raise a profile. For example (It wont happen but its an example) if we had Howard, Donovan and Dempsey all in the same team, the american sports channel would be begging us to sign a deal to show our matches and a LOT of people would take notice of us over their.
To be honest, I'd much prefer to get noticed over here, whilst at the same time, integrating some of our youth into the first team.

Nothing wrong with Dempsey he would make a very good squad player.
An experienced premier league striker with a proven goal scoring record, and a good assist tally too.
Think, Kevin Campbell, Teddy Sheringham,Kevin Philips etc. It often occurs that when in the twilight of their careers players are at their consistent best.
Silvan Distin, being one notable on our books.

You can't deny that raising our profile abroad is important though. Bill hasn't had any look searching for investment 24/7 so needs all the help he can get.

We need to sign players on their ability though, not because of their nationality

It doesn't work, though.

We've had the best players of australia, china and the usa at this club and if that has increased our marketing potential abroad we've been entirely unable to take advantage.

He did score 23 goals the season before for Fulham.

Are you telling me you're counting Radzinski FFS?

Name a better player to ever play for canada at any point. He's the only canadian football to ever do anything in europe,

The theory goes that countries without a strong footballing tradition like australia, usa, china and canada will follow the clubs where their first stars start playing so you can milk that market for money with merchandise sales.

If it worked, then we'd have got loads of chinese fans after taking in their two best players, aussies after cahill, yanks after landon and tim and canadians after radzinski and we'd be rich from all that overseas money.

It didn't work. And it won't work with dempsey, either.

unfortunately our marketing department is about as powerful as that of a local chippy

Bah, the greatest Canadian footballer is Steve Nash but he played basketball instead. His club? Tottenham...see what I did there?
