Off to the states in two weeks, an I'm catching the blues with the San Francisco Blues, against Huddersfield.

Can't wait!

San Francisco, LA, San Diego, will be a boss few weeks.

Any tips would also be kindly appreciated
San Diego - I don't live there, but have visited several times and quite like it.

Maritime Stuff - San Diego is the largest navy port on the West Coast - plenty to see - the USS Midway (aircraft carrier) serves as museum ship, with marvelous tours and exhibits. Other ships available for tour include a Soviet submarine, a US submarine, the Star of India sailing ship - these are through the Maritime Museum of San Diego. You may well see an active duty aircraft carrier alongside at the Naval Air Station on the bay. Two of them are homeported in San Diego, the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71).

Ocean / beach - what a tough place - Imperial Beach, Coronado Island will set you right

Tourist stuff - Coronado Island and the Hotel del Coronado, ride the ferry around San Diego bay or take a harbor tour; Cabrillo National Monument, Black's Beach (if you wish to wish to apply sunscreen ALL over), San Diego Padres (allegedly a major league baseball team), Gaslamp quarter for bars & restaurants, La Jolla Cove.

I think @steveojcc lives or has lived out that way, he might have more to share.

Starting to think I should really do some proper travelling/backpacking. Since I left 6th form college in 2010 I have been in full-time work and apart from a few holidays here and there and mainly using annual leave on watching Everton I need to do something else!

Both of my brothers (younger & older but similar in age) have been to Australia, South America, Asia and one is currently living in Canada window cleaning skyscrapers! Whilst I'm living at home with the parents. Saving up my money to move out very well considering property prices down here but I've just got the feeling now that if I don't do something now before I have a mortgage etc then I never will!

Although I do really enjoy flying I quite like the idea of the trans Siberia railway from Moscow through to Mongolia/ Beijing. Might be a good idea next summer if this is going to be their year...

I made the same trip some months ago.

The only thing i regret is having spent so little time in San Diego, its a very beautiful city, for me much better than San Francisco.

If you like beaches you should go to Hermosa Beach and Santa Monica in LA and Mission Beach in San Diego

Looks like I'll be going to Bilbao and San Sebastian in a few weeks time. Was planning on going up to Bordeaux as well, but it might not work out with flights. Any tips for places to go, or other nearby cities/towns to visit?
Have you been mate, spent a couple of nights in bilbao in May and then went on a camino to Santander, great places, caught a game at the San Mames whilst there.

Have only heard good things about San Sebastian but haven't been.

We're arriving at Heathrow next week, picking up an SUV and driving around the country for a month. I hear that coin
operated parking meters are getting scarce and that scanning with your phone after enrolling with a local operator is the
way it's usually done now.

How does that work for tourists? Or am I worrying about nothing? Can you just swipe your Visa?

There's still a lot of coin operated car parks around most places. Roadside parking meters will usually take a Visa but you might have to ring an automated line if it can't be done on the meter itself - nothing too complicated as these companies want to make it easy to take your money!

If you do the twitter thing, reach out to the Southern California Evertonians, they're a swell bunch and should have plenty of suggestions. If you like beer, San Diego will blow your mind.

Staying in Santa Monica and Mission Beach, I'm very excited!

Thanks for the tips!

Fly out tomorrow evening!

What was good in Bilbao?

Going to Italy next month with my son, Rome, Naples, Pompeii. Then onto Florence and Milan (my son wants to go clothes shopping) Bergamo, Lake Como and back to Milan to fly home, can't wait. Then in February I'm off to the Lofoten Islands by train (she won't fly), with my daughter. Staying at Reine, in the fjord, looks stunning.

The San mames is class and bang in the middle of the town, I took the stadium tour there the day I arrived, 14 quid, well worth it.

The Guggenheim museum is definitely worth a look, it's situated on the river, I didn't go into it though so have no info there.

The river I found a great help in getting around the city, and used it as a guide, it proved useful.

The old town part of the city, the opposite side of the river to the Guggenheim is a great place for drinks and food.

I would recommend a trip to the biscay bridge, it's situated in a town called Portugalete, I think the train runs out there, the views at the top are unreal.

Love Italy....been to pretty much all of those bar Florence, and Strangely the most surprising place was Bergamo...been a couple of times working and had the chance to look around in the evening....the vista from the walled old town is stunning on a clear evening...and the restaurants are superb. enjoy.
