Going to Thailand on Monday for first time. I'm travelling for 3 weeks on my own so any advice gratefully received.

I'm planning a couple days in Bangkok then up to Chang Mai before flying down to the islands to do some diving before going to Phuket.

I'll tag @Bungle in now to inevitably highlight the seedier options but any general itinerary advice or tips where to go or avoid would be helpful.
Bangkok is very expensive as is phuket.

Chang mai is polar opposite to Bangkok, much quieter and not quite as humid. The humidity in Bangkok is stifling, I find 2 days there more than enough.

Koh samui and phangnan are very commercial these days and expensive but the weather is more bearable being by the sea..

I spent several months on samui back in 2010, found it the best place for atmosphere...

Phuket is largely more of an Australian resort as they can fly directly in.

I'm sure you will love it, the Thai people are superb, don't be afraid of the street food, some of the best food I've ever tasted!

Spent an absolute fortune in 48hrs in Bangkok, I'm just at the station to take the sleeper train to Chiang Mai before I do my bank balance, liver and genitalia any more damage.

Street food is amazing I'm eating everything I can lay my hands on. Just washing down squid on a stick with a lovely Chang.

That's great advice about the islands thanks mate, I'm loving this holiday so much.

After the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, Chang mai will seem tranquil!

Loads cheaper up there... Try the Leo beer, it's probably the best beer over there. The Chang is strong and full of chemicals...

Sangsom sprite is a nice cheap refreshing drink too...

After Goodison Chang this tastes like heaven. Will take your advice though and switch to Leo next. Can't wait to pass out on this train!

Haha it’s probably just as bad as Venice now. Kotor is probably the new Dubrovnik now

Venice was part of our first ever Eurotrip. Was a nightmare by day, but awesome at night. Island emptied out, watched some local band play with a smattering of turistas and locals. Was fun.

Oh well, I'm a tourist wherever I may venture, so can't get too upset other people want to see the same places.

Stay away from parties mate. I've heard that soldiers set up check points, it is possible that they could search everyone, find 0.374g of methamphetamine on the ground and then blame you.
Stay safe.

If you happen to bump into a woman called Joy, tell her that I still have her knickers.
