The walking / hiking thread

picture taken on top of Carnedd Llewelyn after walking round the horseshoe in the snow. See if you can spot Carnedd Dafydd, Tryfan, Glyder Fawr / Glyder Fach, and Snowdon. Was an amazing day, so much so we were almost too tired to drink more than a couple when back down in Bethesda.

Was surprised at how grassy and solid the majority of the Carneddau were. Snow looked worse than it was - obviously a navigational challenge, and required proper clothing and footwear, but was largely OK underfoot with the odd bouldery scramble thrown in. The snow seemed to fortunately aid grip rather than make things slippery. Suspect we chose a good day especially given the views
Any proper scrambling on that route? Been thinking of doing it but my partner doesn't have a great head for heights and any exposure. Pen yr Olewen, Carnedd Dafydd, Llewelyn then Pen yr Helgi Ddu? What are the ridges like?

We came from the north rather than the route I think you are describing, which I think starts from Llyn Ogwen. We saw many more people at the summit of Dafydd coming from the direction you describe so maybe it was the easier/shorter route?!

But for one fella we were the only ones doing our route, which instead started and finished in Bethesda, up Mynydd Du and Foel Meirch, then round from Dafydd to Llewellyn summits, Foel Grach, Drosgl, Gryn Wigau. This is the route we took more or less and I followed GPX on my phone https://www.mudandroutes.com/routes/carnedd-dafydd-llewelyn-walk-from-bethesda/

The bit up Foel Meirch to Carnedd Dafydd summit (800m to 1000m) was the most scrambly, and definitely required some use of hands brain and careful footwork. There was a bit of snowfall while we were here too where the sky was temporarily darker than the white snowy ground, which was somewhat unsettling! This weather and scramble up the snow covered rocks only lasted about 30 minutes though before we were all of a sudden on the summit, and, generally, the rest of the walk was grassy and solid and the snow soft. It is one of the harder walks I have done but mostly due to how f*in long it was rather than any technical scrambling difficulty - tbh I thought Glyder Fawr and Fach were more difficult especially getting down.

The ridge between Dafydd and Llewellyn was awesome and didn't feel exposed - I don't have the best head for heights either and wouldn't go near Crib Goch for example.

Going to do that walk in the summer. How long did it take?
I picked a bit of an odd route - we've not done much recently so I thought parking at the top of Kirkstone pass (450 m) would make for an easier walk, but it ended up being harder, and more ascent, as up and over Red Screes is steep. Just going up from Ambleside would be better.

It was 6 hrs all in, just shy of 10 miles and 4000 ft - nothing too challenging if you're match fit but I was pretty hammered by it. Great hill though - it's a nice viewpoint for a panorama of E and W Lakes.

Did you have a pint in the Kirkstone Pass Inn ?

One of my favourite pubs in the UK and a great place to stay too.

That’s good. We’ll start from Ambleside. Didn’t have time to do it last year and it was 38 degrees.

Im teetotal now for a couple of years so dont feel the call of the alehouse so much. Cannot beat a bevvy after a hillwalk that is a certainty ?

Fancy Crib Goch this year with the kids, but going to wait for a perfect day.

Problem with waiting for the perfect day is a lot of people will have the same idea! Having said that, I wouldn't go up there when wet and/or windy!

Me and a mate walked up Snowden yesterday , my First time . Considering I live around 40 mins away , i should of done this ages ago if im honest .

Started walking along the Miners Path at 04:30 . I reached the summit at 06:25 , just in time for sunrise! What an absolute beautiful sight !!

We are going again when I'm back from work in a couple of weeks , though we will try Watkins Path and leave on sunrise .

I would put pictures up, but still cannot figure how to do this from my phone .

Highly recommended ?
Only done Watkins once, didnt enjoy it as much as others, it starts pretty much at sea level so you get the full height hit, however i wanted to tick all the routes off and see the section used in that Carry on film up the Kyber haha

We did Pen yr Ole Wen at the end of January.

A real adventure as my missus was really not happy, due to lots of proper scrambling. She also hates exposed ridges etc, so there was lots of swearing and veering off route, but we made it up in the end and enjoyed the decent and walk back along Llyn Owgen.

Cader Idris tomorrow, and I’m a little apprehensive as it’s another tough one!

It can be pretty brutal up on Carneddau, very exposed.

Had to spend an impromptu night up there once, curled foetal like behind a lump of rock as it was the only visible shelter around.

Got to see the milky way though!

Did Cader Idris a few weeks back, went up from the Minffordd side. Good one.
