The walking / hiking thread

Does anyone know of any good (easyish) walks within half an hour drive of Southport? Maybe 1-2 hours long that I can drag the missus and kids along on!
Coastal path all the way down to Seaforth has a lot of options, could easily make a good walk through the pinewoods (ainsdale / Formby) - you prob know that area though. Mainly flat.
If you want some views then Rivington / Winter Hill above Horwich is prob nearest substantial hill.

If you head out to Banks, just outside Southport, the Preston end, there`s some very easy and flat walks, along the coastal path there.

Even if you`re not into bird watching, you`ll see loads of birds, as all the waders / geese / Black Headed Gulls, are on the marshes getting ready to to breed.

This in turn, attracts Peregrines, who like to take them on the wing, which is a pretty impressive sight and you may get lucky and see their courtship display too.

Yeah I looked at Rivington yesterday. Is that worth a visit?
I'd say so yeah - you've got the ruins of Liverpool castle on the reservoir and then the gardens are nice, steep walk up to rivington pike folly. It's then open moorland to winter hill radiomast but you'd prob leave that for another day if you're out with the kids.

It's not amazing but there's nothing big-country amazing on the doorstep of Merseyside - push it out to an hour away and you can start hitting the South Lakes, Peak, N Wales etc. The beach and woods at Formby / Ainsdale is prob the most impressive landscape we have, dune systems like that aren't too common in the UK afaik.

Sandstone Trail Delamare / Frodhsam can be as hard or easy as you want it to be and very scenic.

Will be posting here as my much as me old body holds up. Just trying to keep active as it’s all I can manage. I’m usually out in all weathers, try to swerve dying in storms though.

I try to aim for 10k steps and 5miles every day, with the great British weather giving me a day off at least, it sometimes touches 20k steps with the dogs but rarely. I am not a mad runner like others.
