No disrespect to Aaron Lennon, but there is no comparison in terms of career or goals scored between Walcott and Lennon.

I’m not comparing the 2, it’s pointless because they’re not the same player. Lennon is more of a work horse and had never been a goal scorer, he’ll put a shift in up and down all day but his output will be limited.

But like Walcott he was not a good signing and I said as much when he signed.

The issues I have with Walcott are his actual ability, it’s very limited; his age and the 5 year contract. One major injury that really affects his pace and he’s a dud. Because he’s simply not good enough to be on a pitch without his pace

Maybe we already have in Vlasic or Lookman. I am not sure it is so easy to just go out and pick up a great player for very little money.

I think that we have to accept that players being sold to premiership clubs now carry a premium. I think that transfer fees have nearly doubed in the last two or three seasons alone. After all 142m for Coutinho , I now see Mahrez being quoted at 100m . Sanchez going for 35m although there is only four monthe left in the season and he could be signed for nothing. Barkley, who hasn't kicked a ball all season and out of contrct in four months making 15m...it is all bonkers.

We see fees of three and four million for youngster who still have not made the under 23 team.

Football has changed utterly in the last two or three seasons and the days of picking up great potential for very little money may be gone.
I like Lookman. If that's a Walsh signing then we need more of that and less of this Walcott nonsense.

I'm happy with this.

We have lots of young players who won't be 23 for another couple of seasons, longer in some cases. Pinning our hopes here and now on several 20 year olds is not smart and very likely to inhibit the development of individual players.

No problem with guys like Walcott coming in during the meantime. He addresses obvious weaknesses and adds pace and threat. He'll replace Lennon and Mirallas and I'm not sure how people could argue with that.

Agree here Tim.

I'd like to see at least one of Vlasic/Lookman get a loan now though. They need game time.

seems a bit pricey for an upgrade on Lennon with no resale value. anyway welcome Theobald, hope you see some of the ball but I wouldn't bank on it under this gaffer.

Thing is with Lookman - there must be a reason three successive managers now haven't played him consistently.

He impresses in flashes but I think that's the nature of the player he is. It's not a criticism as such - I think he just needs minutes to iron out those flaws but because - physically - he isn't the strongest, it can be very easy for him to get pushed out of games if he starts them.

I'd like to see Lookman be used in the way he was in the derby. Coming on to stretch the opposition in the last 20 minutes or so, whether we're winning or losing. His pace automatically puts sides on the back foot but if he starts games he does tend to go missing.

If he isn't going to be used for that role for the rest of the season then IMO we have to be look at getting him out on loan like we have with Dowell. Heck, get him there with Dowell at Forest if we can.

I think what is getting lost here is walsh is a decent scout and obviously has an eye for a player, what he is not and never has been is a DOF, he should have been brought in as head scout with someone else as DOF

I take it you've seen enough football to recognise that he's got more to his game than pace. He's actually technically very good with both feet, has intelligent movement and can score all kinds of goals, inside or outside the box. I stand by it - he is better than anyone we have right now, he walks into our first team from the moment he puts that pen to paper.

I like Lookman too. Trouble is, players like him who we sign from lower league clubs at a young age, aren’t quite ready for the PL yet.
What we need is players currently better than what we have to play these positions until the young lads are ready.
Which is what Walcott is IMO.
