Transfer Rumour Thiago Silva

The idea that Thiago doesn’t massively improve us is ridiculous.

Ability aside, just his experience will have a massive impact on the players around him. We are missing genuine winners and the mentality that comes with it.

We’ve signed plenty of players with “winning mentalities” over the years and it hasn’t done anything, they just get sucked into the malaise. At the end of the day our biggest issue is quality.

Yeah. Winning mentality is a load of rubbish. If you’re a very good player, you generally play for a very good team, hence the trophies. Take one of them out and put them in an Everton shirt, I don’t get how this “winning mentality” having won a load with ten times better players previously helps him out.

Sucked into the malaise is a good point. I do think silva has the quality though.

and my point was more with people like Holgate in mind. He would benefit massively from having someone in the squad who had been there, done that.

We have to try and instil a winning mentality in our players ourselves. That comes from the manager, and it comes from winning matches. You win more matches if you have better quality players. That’s the circle of life.

Does make you wonder as well if signing Silva increases the chances of Gabriel arriving? Putting Gabriel alongside his national team captain for a year (or two), may be a good thing from Gabriel’s point of view?

Are you suggesting 'Terry when he went to Villa' was a similar standard of player?

Terry benefitted greatly from being one of Mourinhos darlings (when he himself was revered by the press) and it elevated him to 'world class.'

Silva is at least twice as good as Terry.

Do you mean Silva now is at least twice as good as Terry was when he went to Villa?

Cos in his prime Terry was a top player man, maybe not technically the best but in terms of out and out defending he was up there

Twice is clearly a massively wide of the mark. And yes, I agree Terry was a good defender, a bit of a throwback as in no-nonsense, defend first and worry about what happens next when we get there. (unlike his frizzy headed teammate)

However, prime Terry v Silva TODAY is still pretty much an easy choice (in my opinion, which doesn't count. If the manager wants him, a load of biffs off the forum are not going to sway him either way.)

I think it's a fair comparison. Terry perhaps wasn't quite on the level of Silva in their respective primes, but he wasn't far off. If you add the fact that Terry was about as familiar with the league as it's possible to be, I'd say it's a similar proposition.

100% this. A winning mentality comes from walking onto the pitch knowing that if you play well you'll win. If you don't have the ability to back that up then it's just misplaced arrogance. The only way you can have a winning mentality across the team is by having good players who can realistically back themselves to win any given game.
