Transfer Rumour Thiago Silva

It isnt poppycock. To label the three you have mentioned with it would be though, none of which had a successful spell with Barcelona and were coming from being a first teamer, with real quality proven.

Silva isn't coming from the same situation, he's A. First team regular and has been a leader for PSG and B. He's an international captain. C. What he has won he has done so by being a key part of each team internationally and domestically.

I get your point and do think it has merit, but possibly not with Silva's scenario.

Also worth pointing out having Silva in wont immediately make Micheal Keane less error prone. Getting a proven winner is fine, but you need to get more than one and that may take time, but it's a start, well Ancelotti was the start i guess.Im lucky enough to have been in behind the scenes of a football club, and having particular characters really does help a team progress.
There has been a LOT of questioning of Silva's attitude and leadership though. He's won loads, but he's also captained a side which has suffered some downright embarrassing capitulations in their biggest games. Having big characters helps, but just having won trophies doesn't automatically make you a great teacher or personality.

Yeah he's captained some capulations but he's mentalitity cant be questioned had to fight very hard for a career at the top level

it doesn't mate. There is no guarantee for anyone we sign really.

If the finances are reasonable in his contract, it's definately a big opportunity to get a quality, high profile name in who can do a job for a couple of years and also teach Mason and Yerry a few things.

That's a different thing though isn't it. The conversation was specifically about a 'winning' mentality, and it's questionable whether he's actually evidenced that. Again, it's not that he can't/won't have a positive influence, just that it really isn't a given. The last time we got a player like that - Eto'o - there were pretty strong rumours that he undermined the manager and wasn't a positive influence at all. It's very simplistic to say that a player who's won stuff just has some innate ability to pass that on to others.

I think it depends on perspective re Eto'o. I suspect he just saw it was a bit of a shambles under Martinez and got off.

The big thing is, Ancelotti has worked with this guy. He's worked with lots of top players, and I'm sure he knows the ones who would suit the circumstances we need to those who don't. If you haven't worked with them, you are guessing to some degree. I mean it makes sense to utilise his "black book" of contacts.

For me it's fighters mentality and backbone we have a serious lack of it in the team. I'd be reasonably confident he could provide that and confidence in his skill given he is still a very good player wether that translates to winning who knows

Oh don't get me wrong, i'm not saying we shouldn't get him in, just commenting on the 'winners' thing. Lots of people have commented on how great it would be for the others to learn from and he could bring this mentality etc, I just don't think it's the case. Talking about cricket again, I played and worked with some top (well not TOP but international level) players who I learnt nothing from, and some journeyman pros or just domestic players who I learnt loads from. I don't think the ability to teach and set an example is in any way linked to your own level of ability.

The argument about him taking game time off Mina & Holgate makes no sense whatsoever.

We only have 3 senior CBs at the club. We've been very lucky this season that we didnt have 2 injuries / suspensions at the same time or we'd have been playing Schnides or a kid there.

And if Mina / Holgate's game time is so important what do these people want us to do? Not sign a CB at all and just play Mina and Holgate every week? Or sign a CB to play back up to those 2 for the season?

Makes no sense
Sign a CB who takes playing time and will also be here in 3 years time. That's really it. Just sign someone who isn't so short term when our short term prospects of winning things aren't great.
