Or he's seen we still have players in the U23s who take it as a literal cut off point. Did Unsworth really believe winning it with the oldest average age (twice) meant something?

Nobody over 21 should be playing U23 football unless they are returning from injury.

18-21 MUST be either loaned for competitive football, sold on OR regular bench for the first team.

I have no idea how good Small is, but if he's as talented as they say he needs to be playing something other than B team football from this August.

It's up to Brands and the rest of the staff to properly outline the plan Everton envisage for him.

Dortmund attract the cream of the talent because they show a pathway, another club in Germany are famous for developing keepers (I forget who.)

Everton academy need to be seen as a place where with talent AND application you are assured competitive football at the end of it. Not a place to go through the motions for 5/10 years only to end up and Morcombe as a trialist.

If we had a more rounded squad, we could probably afford to give these lads more minutes, unfortunately that's a whole other story.

The

Dortmund are Germany’s 2nd biggest team and could miss out on the champions league this season . Have won a few German cups in the last 10yrs but it’s 9 years since they won the title.

I don’t really know a lot about them, but maybe Klopp stopped the buying of teenagers and selling for profit 2 years later, to try and build a
Team. And maybe he got lucky that Bayern were going through a transition period. When he won back to back titles.

But as Germany’s 2nd biggest team, im
Sure the fans will soon get peed off with them not laying a glove on Bayern every year and struggling to get champions league qualification. To know they at least give youth a
Chance and have millions in the bank
My point regarding Dortmund is it's a place that attracts young, elite players because they clearly believe they will have a well defined pathway.

Haaland, Sancho, Bellingham etc.

I mean just to give some balance, we didn't win the league with the oldest squad the 1st season. This season we have one of the younger squads with lads from the 18's regularly getting game time.

We have also brought through a whole host of players from our 23's to get league action.
You're right, I just checked.
2nd season was, with essentially the same players. No progress, you could argue careers held back.

The last couple of seasons things have improved. Have they improved enough to hold on to players like Small?

The point being, they need to be playing proper football. U23's isn't.

Yes but are sacrificing challenging for trophies and even champions league places.

It’s the equivalent of Liverpool doing this. The prem is a totally different league, because of TV money even the teams fighting relegation are spending fortunes.

Ok had we done this For the last 5 years. We would be a lot better off financially, I doubt we would have had much success

The other thing is agents.
The reason Riola didn’t send him to Utd 18months ago, was because he knew if
He was a success,
He could be there for years. And it could be a
Long time until he gets his next big pay day on the player. Sending him to Dortmund first, he knows he can get him out of there after a coupe of seasons.

Im not sure I want us to be a club, where super agents dictate to us, by bringing us brilliant 17/18 yr olds. And then taking them away 2 yrs later.

so no different then

so no different then
But you will never have succes in England With that philosophy. Germany’s 2nd biggest club, maybe they still can if they buy the right players to play with them . But it’s still a big if.
I doubt they will get near Bayern anytime soon

Done nothing that I’m aware off in Europe the last few years. Spurs battered them in 2019 last 16.

And like I’ve said, im
Sure their 80k home support will soon get fed
Up of the revolving door.

Well that goes back to my original post if we had a better balanced squad we could probably allow minutes here and there to talented youngsters.

Unfortunately we don't, so I understand the reluctance to throw some of the prospects in whilst we still have a good chance of qualifying for Europe.

You can also understand why young players like Small may fancy a move that offers and more defined route to first team football.

be a bit gutted if he leaves given how highly he is regarded, ironically if he was anything other than a LB he’d probably be getting PL minutes this season

Because he’s get loads of minutes ahead of Shaw and Telles, and Chilwell and Alonso.

Maybe we could give him a run on the wing coming off the bench for a few minutes.

It would be very disappointing if he leaves given how highly rated he is. Nkounkou has looked good to me too but who Carlo has made his stance quite clear on him so far. Small could be backup to Digne and get real minutes if he’s up to it.

It does seem rash if true. He is likely only one injury to Lucas/Niels away from a PL bench and one would assume that will involve him getting some PL minutes off the bench next season. Which will be a pretty decent proposition for a lad who will have only just turned 17. He will also have one of (if not the) best LB in the PL to learn from not to mention all of Carlo's experience.
I'm not seeing any better options for him over the coming 1-2 season at the clubs that have been mentioned in the reports. Be patient young man and work hard.

Agree with this.

We had players like Pennington and Dowell that were kept far too long. Some of them hngvaround so long they were probably due a testamonial!

Im not sure it does either the club or the player much good. Obviously there are some special cases, but generally, they should be put on loan as soon as possible.
