This season vs Martinez 13/14 season

We can’t just keep looking at the managers all the time. Fans seem to ignore the quality of players. The decline in quality in the squad since 13/14 is absolutely huge. The 13/14 team could run us off the pitch with ease, and I dread to think what Lukaku would do agaisnt Keane and Mina.

Forget the comparison made in the thread title for a second; as things stand - with 2 home games left - the rotten home record of the last Martinez season (which pretty much condemned him here) might still be exceeded.

I am of opinion @davek has been proved correct regarding Bobby M. That first year under him was the best in a generation. Sadly, that team, and Bobby himself, rapidly succumbed to ‘Evertonisation’ ( ie becoming useless). But for one halcyon season, back in 13/14, we all actually looked forward to watching our team. I miss those days...I do not think we will see its likes ever again...72 points!!...oh the memories.

Europe was here for the taking this season.

Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal in the doldrums.

How we manage to be below West Ham is shameful.

We had games in hand against utter rubbish and should be where Leicester are now.
Next season we can be miles better and still miss Europe because other teams have sorted themselves out, this season has been shocking a fluke win at Arsenal and a good win at easy pickings Liverpool dosent hide it.

They are different in so many different ways.

Roberto made it clear he wanted to build us up from youth and play beautiful football. That, coupled with the fear every Evertonian had, due to Moyes' and co, belittling us for 4-5 years, i think a fair few thought we'd struggle, and quite simply, it was a beautiful season, which wouldn't have happened without Roberto, but equally stopped short of CL because of Roberto's inexperience.

This season, we've hired a manager with one of the finest pedigree's in Europe. Yet, I don't feel excited, purely because we know these results are happening probably just because of Ancelotti, and if he walked tomorrow, we'd still have the uninterested, lazy player who have hampered since the Roberto era started to crumble... i.e. Sigurdsson.
I think we're winning ugly, and it's hard to tell if we're genuinely progressing, or we're taking the best of a strange season. Players who have possibly underwhelmed like Michael Keane, Iwobi, Calvert-Lewin, Coleman (in recent seasons), are really stepping up and playing their role. We've signed James, who's blockbuster and continuously strengthened with signings like Allan, Doucoure and Godfrey, it feels like we won't just be a flash in the pan, but more mainstay and that's what excites me.

For record.

After 17 games of 13-14, we had just beaten Swansea to go 5th with 34 points.
After 17 games of 20-21, we have just beaten Wolves 2-1 away to go 4th with 32 points.
Great post

Loved going the game that year. Home away it was great.

Everything else since has been god awful

The difference between these two seasons are simply one manager inherited at squad that finished 7th, 7th and 6th in their last 3 seasons when the other manager inherited a squad that finished 8th, 8th and 12th plus his first season hampered by a Global pandemic!

Had Carlo taken over from Moyes, instantly we would have been challenging just like Martinez did but ultimately he got lucky. He wanted Ba from Chelsea and ended up with Lukaku.

Ancelotti needs to make roads in the transfer window and strengthen in those positions that have been weaker - RB, CM, RW.

I am puzzled by the 'next season' optimism that permeates so many GOTers.
Next season, we will still be Everton...which means disappointing. The year after that will be the same...and the year after that. ...disappointment after disappointment. Two words sum up the malaise that has permanently afflicted our once proud club....

Me?...I am not bothered by it anymore...it's become parody-like. I still care and support the club. But I now know we are entirely useless...always will be. So I never get upset by the constant disappointment.. my support just limps along using humour as essential crutch.

He got the very maximum out of players he inherited off Moyes - and after only one summer teaching them to play ball to feet football for the first time in their careers. It was a monumental feat to get 72 points out of a fairly limited team like that.

Sadly, they simply weren't capable of keeping up to those standards, and Roberto wasn't capable of the ruthless ability to change gears and sell players in the summer of 2014 (too busy doing tv work at the World Cup that summer for my liking), the standards dropped and certain players eventually stabbed him in the back to cover up their own inadequacies.

Still....

for one brief shining moment, that was known as Camelot."
