Shot stopping has never been Howard's problem. He isn't beaten easily from range and straight shots. His problems come from his collection of crosses which is nothing short of abysmal and commanding his area and finally dealing with the shot - he doesn't seem to get a strong enough hand on it to palm it away and it falls to the opposition.

On the other hand Joel commands his area and collects the ball however he is suspect to the odd howler from a long shot (Gaston vs Soton H last season) but with enough training and communication with the team he can become more complete

It's strange because Robles was playing and keeping clean sheets Howard's fans slated him for not having much to do, even when it wasn't true. It was disappointing from certain posters.

at the same time Joel's fans (or were they just anti-Howard- doesn't matter) were crediting him with organizing the defense and being the difference.

So which is it like?

Joel came in and was actually able to catch a cross. He took a lot of pressure off the defence and was a big reason why we were starting to grind out results again. Obviously that fell apart when Howard was brought back in.
 
Howard is the one player I really don't want to see next season. Don't think he's fast or composed enough for this level anymore, and I haven't been conviced by a few decent performances. The only difference in the last couple of games, is that he has made the one save he gets called upon to make, but I put that down to the law of averages. With Barry, you still get the impression he has something to contribute over the course of a season. With Howard, you get the impression of a keeper on a steep decline, with clangers that will cost you a season. If we have serious ambitions of getting Champions League, a new goalkeeper is a must.
