Im 50/50 on the shot being Tims fault but the punch that preceded was pathetic. He really needed more conviction coming out to punch by taking everything with him on his way but as usual he didn't .If he'd have been braver he could have got the ball elevated and away, because he seemed to hold back the ball didn't clear the danger area and hey ho ffs another goal conceded Joel for me all day...and before ya start neggin all the shots he did stop most keepers would and should have saved them.Tim please grow some and stop being a fanny sometimes in your line of work you have to get hurt for the team).

I don't see how can anyone blame Tim How for the goal. He just can't see the ball since Gibson, Naismith and Oviedo were blocking his sight. First, Barry was a tit by committing that needless foul. Second, not all our players were back to our area to defend. You should always head the ball away. Third, Oviedo should have thrown himself to Willian before he took the shot.

Think I need to see the goal again.

Initial reaction was not to blame Howard.

However, I'm more than happy to change my mind!

Might just be me mate, but he goes to save the ball then all of sudden seems to pull out and just lets it roll past him, seriously.
Deflection or not i 100% believe that he could have got that.

I thouhgt the same watching it at the game, but seeing it again on MotD it looked to me like he just couldn't get there in time, even if he hadn't seemed to pull back his hand at the last minute. Tbh this is a habit of his, I've seen several times when he'd diving for a ball he can't reach, pulling his hand back. From a 'looking like he's trying' perspective, he prob shouldn't! :o

Completely disagree with the first half of this. Yes most of the saves he made weren't too much of a stretch (much like his Sec of Def game), but the punch was decent, and I don't think he could have got the deflection.

Personally I would have liked to see Robles keep the position, but Howard came in and did well. Made some good (if expected of him) saves, came out well to claim crosses, and was unlucky with the goal. Maybe Robles might have had a better chance to save it with his longer reach, but who knows what else might have happened with him in goal, and hindsight is 20/20.

i wanted Joel to get his deserved place in the team, but to be honest Howard was immense. he was nothing short of perfect. just unlucky.

And made a bad Management decision. Regardless of today's result.

It's what all managers would have done, with the exception of maybe Mourinho and possibly LVG, it's the one thing they've all got in common regardless of how they trust youth or value experience.

It's always been the way to pick your best keeper as and when he's fit and available, it won't ever change. Robles has suffered the same fate that every understudy goalkeeper has during the course of their career and it's not exclusive in anyway to Martinez management practices.

All that is leaving aside the fact that Howard played okay and was at no fault for the defeat of course.

The Issue is no matter how bad hes been this season and he has been utterly woeful, He still gets picked week in week out when hes fit.

I agree with you that most managers tend to stick with the perceived first choice but at the same time most managers wouldve dropped him by now because of the amount of mistakes hes made

Yes they would if they considered the understudy to be of the right quality and character.

He's proved by not playing Robles in the cup or European matches and by also stating his desire that he'd have liked to have brought in a young quality keeper in the last window to challenge and put pressure on Howard that he doesn't believe Robles is that replacement at this moment.

Think Nyland wouldve been third choice. Then Howard pisses off in the summer.
